However, the Seminoles are also recruiting one of the top kickers in the country to shore up a position that has been shaky over the past couple of seasons. Rising senior Jake Weinberg made his pledge to Florida State back in January after the program extended him a full scholarship.
FSU has always been Weinberg's dream school and it was the perfect opportunity for him.
"Everything about Florida State is on the right path. It's been a dream school and I've just been waiting for the opportunity," Weinberg said to NoleGameday previously. "When I was on campus, everything was going great for me, the staff was treating me in an unbelievable way, and I just felt like it was the right time for me. I just feel like it's a perfect fit for me, especially in the state of Florida."
During his junior season, Weinberg connected on five of his eight field goal attempts with a long of 57 yards while hitting all 17 of his extra points. Over the last two years, he's made 16/24 field goal attempts and 42/45 of his extra points. He showed off a strong leg by recording touchbacks on 68 of his 73 kickoffs during the last two seasons.
Head coach Mike Norvell has told Weinberg that he's searching for a kicker with the mentality to perform under pressure.
"Really he just wants to see mentally. Special teams here is a big part for him, he said it's the first thing they do in practice," Weinberg said. "You see on his board they've got a bunch of the hidden yardage, the net punts, field goals, and all that. He said the two things that he looked at me [for] was how mentally I can deal with everything and how hard I work. He said when I get here that he's going to keep pushing me to work harder."
Over the weekend, Weinberg participated at Pat O'Donnell's Youth Camp, the punter for the Green Bay Packers. He was able to easily connect on a 60-yard field goal that had plenty of distance to spare.
