REPORT: Alabama Safety Caleb Downs to Enter Transfer Portal
The college football world got stirred up Wednesday afternoon as legendary head football coach Nick Saban announced that he would be retiring from the sport. In response to this news, Crimson Tide safety Caleb Downs is expected to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal according to On3's Jeremy Johnson.
Downs, a former 5-star from Hoschton, Georgia was heavily pursued by the Bulldogs during his high school recruitment but eventually decided to continue his football career under the tutelage of Nick Saban. However, with Saban no longer coaching the Tide, Downs could be in search of a new team.
Downs' first year with the Tide was a massive success. As a true freshman, he accounted for 107 tackles and two interceptions which earned 2nd-team All-American honors. His addition to the Bulldogs' secondary would be massive, given the departures of Tykee Smith and Javon Bullard to the NFL draft.
It is currently unclear whether or not the Bulldogs will land the highly talented safety. However, sources have indicated Georgia is a likely landing spot along with a potential for Ohio State to be in the mix. The Bulldogs have made drastic measures to entice Downs to transfer to Georgia. Including hiring his former position coach Travaris Robinson.
