ESPN Expert Says Brock Bowers Needs to 'Be in the Conversation' for the Heisman
Over the last two weeks, Georgia has not only further solidified itself as one of the country's top teams after defeating Auburn and Kentucky, but two of their players have showcased just how special they are on the football field. Quarterback Carson Beck and tight end Brock Bowers have both strung together two very impressive outings against SEC opponents, which has resulted in a lot of love in the media.
So much so that both Beck and Bowers have seen their Heisman odds rise over the last two weeks, and many are starting to wonder if Georgia will have another player representing the program in New York near the end of the season, maybe even two.
History says that quarterbacks certainly have a better chance at winning the award than any other position on the field, but Bowers has certainly made a strong opening case for himself and people are taking notice of it. One of which is football analyst Todd McShay, and he made the case for Bowers on The Ryen Russillo podcast following Georgia's win over Kentucky:
"I'm gonna say this right now, though. We are six weeks into the season. And I get it, Caleb Williams is out there, and Drake Maye is out there, and Michael Penix Jr. is out there for Washington and Box NIx. And it is a quarterback award but if it's not a quarterback, the best player in college football to me, and he's better than some of the quarterbacks we are talking about, Brock Bowers, the tight end. He's blocking at a higher level than he has been, and I know no one's gonna care about that, but he's blocking at a pretty high level, most importantly, he is so hard to defend. Like the separation he gets and the late separation he gets and the feel has for the passing game. You look at him and you look at what he has done, this season throughout he has been great, especially over the last four games the competition level has risen a little bit, considerably from the first game or two and then especially the last two games against Auburn when it was close and then against Kentucky, which I would argue going into the game is the best opponent they have faced, but in the two games 15 catches, 289 yards and two touchdowns. This guy is special and he is different.... He's gotta be in the conversation."
McShay went on to note that he doesn't think Bowers will win the award, considering it was nearly 70 years ago when the last time a tight end took home the award, but he definitely thinks he should be in the conversation.
Bowers currently has the ninth-best odds in the country to win the Heisman Trophy, according to VegasInsider. It may be a long shot for the Georgia star, but if he continues his current pace and dominance, it might be hard to keep him out of the final voting.
