UPDATE: The Latest on Todd Monken and the NFL Job Search
Kirby Smart is no stranger to losing coordinators in the offseason during his tenure as the head coach at the University of Georgia. Mel Tucker (DC) and Jim Chaney (OC) departed in 2018. He replaced offensive coordinator James Coley in 2019, that same season his assistant head coach and the first hire at Georgia in the form of offensive line coach Sam Pittman left to become a head coach at Arkansas. He most recently lost defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to Oregon.
So, following a second consecutive national title, it's expected his position coaches and coordinators would be receiving calls. Most notably, offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Monken, a former NFL coordinator with obvious aspirations for a potential return to the NFL, has already interviewed for both the Baltimore Ravens (twice) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though, those interviews were well over a week ago now.
This leaves us with one question: Where does Todd Monken stand just a little over a month from the start of spring practice?
No News is Good News
Sources have indicated to Dawgs Daily that there will be no formal announcement for a fourth term in Athens for Monken. Though it's clear that there's still some settling going on in the NFL coaching market. The Baltimore Ravens and the Buccaneers have been the only two teams to formally interview Monken, though those aren't the only available opportunities.
The Dallas Cowboys are still without an offensive coordinator, however, there's been reports that head coach Mike McCarthy is going to assume play-calling duties — something that Monken has had poor experiences with in the past in Cleveland. The same could be said about the coordinating opening in Denver under newly hired head coach Sean Payton.
There are still two head coach vacancies in the NFL as well with the Arizona Cardinals job and the Indianapolis Colts job being available. This brings us to Eric Bienemy, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator who is expected to be interviewed for at least one of those openings. Could Monken to the Chiefs be a possibility? There are absolutely zero crossovers or connections in the paths of Monken and Andy Reid, though that's not always a requirement as we've seen with the mutual interest between Monken and Jon Harbaugh in Baltimore.
Georgia fans seem to have a bit of rightful tension and suspense around the topic. After all, Monken took an offense that was averaging 30.8 PPG in 2019, and three years later had them averaging 41.1 PPG and consistently in the top-5 in offensive efficiency metrics. Though they only need to hold their breath for a few more days it seems, once the Super Bowl festivities subside, one would assume the hiring processes will ramp up and come to a conclusion so Draft Boards can get underway.
