What Mike White has Shown in Year One as Head Coach
The past few years have not been easy for the Georgia basketball program. Several years ago, when the decision was made to let go of long-time head coach Mark Fox to bring in Tom Crean, it seemed like it would be a step forward for the program. That would not be the case, which then led to Georgia bringing in former Florida head coach, Mike White to take over the reins of the men's basketball team.
Georgia was coming off of one of their worst seasons to date in 2022. The team won just six games, which was the fewest in program history dating all the way back to 1973. White had his work cut out for him, but it hasn't taken long for him to get the train back on track.
White got straight to work by bringing in six total transfers during the offseason to help try and provide some stability to his roster. He also was able to hold on to Kario Oquendo, who led the team in scoring during the 2022 season and at one point was in the transfer portal but then elected to come back. All of which have been major contributors to Georgia's success this season.
White and his team got off to a pretty hot start to begin the season as they won 10 games before conference play began. Now fast forwarding to where the season is currently at, Georgia possesses a total record of 16-10 and a 6-7 record against conference opponents, including big wins against both Auburn and Kentucky. For context, the Bulldogs won six conference games in the previous four seasons just once.
Prior to the season, Georgia was picked by the media to finish second to last in the entire conference. They are now currently ranked 10th in the conference and have a great opportunity to increase their spot in the standings before the regular season is over in the next couple of weeks.
So what has coach White shown during his first season? He has shown that he has the ability to make Georgia a winning basketball program. For him to essentially makeshift a basketball roster and take a team that won just six total games a season ago to now already having 16 is mightily impressive. When you watch this team take the court, it is evident that not only has White bought into making a change, but his players have as well, and it's how they have gotten to this point.
It may still take some time before Georgia is getting a bracket spot during March Madness, but based on this season, it will be sooner rather than later. White has shown he can coach his team to wins, now he just needs to put all the pieces together and start getting recruits to buy into what is being preached in Athens.
White and his team have exceeded expectations in year one and have provided a very positive outlook for what lays ahead of the Georgia men's basketball program.
