Georgia to Defend a Forgotten Winning Streak Saturday
Georgia football has done a lot of winning lately, meaning the Bulldogs have multiple winning streaks going for them.
There are the 24-straight victories dating back to the 2021 Orange Bowl playoff game. Then you have the 34-straight regular season wins, which started with the blackout win against Mississippi State in 2020. Regular attendees of Sanford Stadium have enjoyed a 23-game home winning streak.
However, there is a smaller yet longer winning streak that has flown under the radar. Georgia will either extend or snap that streak next week in Jacksonville: Beginning with the 42-7 pounding of Florida in 2017, Georgia has won seven straight games following a bye week — 2020's season was played with no bye weeks.
It should come as no surprise that most of those victories came against the Gators. Georgia has had the week before the "World's Largest Cocktail Party" off almost every year since 2013. During this seven-game streak, the Bulldogs have defeated Florida five times with a cumulative score of 178-68.
The other two games both took place in 2020. The COVID year with the SEC-only slate brought several scheduling quirks. For one, Georgia's bye weekend came the Saturday after its loss to Florida. After a week off, the Bulldogs returned to Athens with new black jerseys and a new starting quarterback (J.T. Daniels) and defeated Mississippi State in the aforementioned blackout game.
Georgia gained another bye two weeks later when Vanderbilt canceled midweek. The Bulldogs' next game was a 49-14 drubbing of Missouri in the 2020 regular-season finale.
The last defeat Georgia suffered after a bye week came against Florida in 2016, head coach Kirby Smart's first season. And now the Bulldogs look to be heavy favorites coming into this year's matchup as well.
