QB Describes What It's Like to Play Against UGA Defense: "The Field Was Smaller"
The University of Georgia has produced some of the nation's top defenses over the past couple of years, but none of them quite measure up to what the Bulldogs had in 2021. Five first-round picks, statistically one of the greatest defenses in the sport's history and what ended up leading them to a national championship.
Former Georgia Tech quarterback Jordan Yates recorded a short video on TikTok where he talked about what it was like facing Georgia's historic defense in 2021. To sum things up, Yates said, "The field was smaller," as he referenced how fast and talented the Bulldogs were at every single position. Every yard was a grind.
The former Georgia Tech quarterback even goes on to say that Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter, another future first-round pick, told Yates, "Y'all are so unprepared," during the game. Yates would confirm that his team really didn't know what was going on when they faced Georgia's defense.
By the end of the 2021 season, Georgia's defense only allowed an average of 10.2 points per game, had the nation's second-best rushing defense and pitched three shutouts that season with Georgia Tech being one of them. In an era of college football where the game seems to be dominated by the offensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs managed to wind back the clock and prove that you can still win games on defense.
It was clear when watching Georgia's defense that season that they were without a doubt one of the greatest units to ever take the field, but there is something about hearing it from a former college athlete themselves that really puts it into perspective. The Bulldogs possessed an immensely talented defense the following year in 2022, but we might not ever see a defense like the one we saw them field in 2021.
