Mike Bobo Explains Why He Came Back to Georgia
The University of Georgia is littered with former Bulldogs on their current football staff. As Kirby Smart mentioned, "retention" has been one of the biggest keys in their national championship run. During this time, they have welcomed back former coaches to the university, such as Mike Bobo. Bobo spoke with the media yesterday and explained why he came back to Georgia.
Bobo's history with Georgia extends past recent memory when he was the offensive coordinator for then-Georgia head coach Mark Richt. He was also a QB for the Dawgs in the mid-90s, then once his time was over, he became their graduate assistant. He left the program for one season in 2000, then was back the following season until the end of the 2014 season, being their OC from the 2007 season until then. He was also the HC for Colorado State from 2015-2019, South Carolina's OC in 2020, and Auburn's in 2021. Then rejoined Georgia as an offensive analyst in 2022.
Bobo was asked in his press conference yesterday why he didn't join the Georgia staff three years ago in 2020, when there was an opening then, and why his time is right now. Bobo mentioned that "there wasn't an official opportunity to come back three years ago." But, "after Auburn, I had opportunities to go other places, but I wanted to go somewhere where I can continue learning as a coach. I always wanted to be under the coach Smart/coach Saban tree."
"Better never rests," as the team mantra would state for the 2023 Georgia Bulldogs, but Bobo bought into that when he joined Georgia in 2022. Tight ends coach Todd Hartley mentioned similar things about the challenge of coaching Brock Bowers and how he uses it to better himself as a coach. Having coaches on your staff who exemplify that they have bought into their team mantra and culture helps the players buy into that culture much easier.
"I even tell recruits you wanna go somewhere where you are developed, and I came here last year to try and get developed more as a coach. Those guys took me in, and it was very very positive. With [Todd] Monken going to the NFL and the opportunity presented itself to be coordinator, and I felt comfortable about being here," Bobo stated.
The reason stated above is something commonly heard amongst the recruits that Smart has signed and even former Dawgs that have gone on to the NFL. But, for Bobo, that was all it was to him. "I didn't come here to be the offensive coordinator. I came here to continue to learn and grow as a coach, and it just happened to work out that way."
With Monken, Georgia's offense had reached heights not seen before, but with Bobo back at the helm of the offense, they could explode even more this year. He is bought into "better never rests," and that mindset will take over his offense in the 2023 season as they hunt for their third straight national title.
