Georgia vs Georgia Tech Preview - What the Stats Say About the Rivalry

A preview of this year's annual rivalry matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Rivalry week has officially arrived, which also means the last week of the regular season has also arrived. Georgia and Georgia Tech will face off once again to close out the regular season, and while the Bulldogs have dominated this rivalry as of late, there is still no lack of hatred between these two teams.

Georgia was pinned as the overwhelming favorite earlier in the week, as expected, but this is a much improved Georgia Tech team under head coach Brent Key compared to the product that Georgia Tech was rolling out onto the field in previous seasons. So as Georgia prepares for their last regular season game and looks to extend their undefeated streak, let's take a look at what the numbers have to say about this game.

Georgia is currently averaging 40.4 points per game which ranks fifth in the country, and Georgia Tech is averaging 31.9, which places them at 38th. On defense, the Dawgs are allowing just 15.1 ppg, which also ranks fifth, and the Yellow Jackets are allowing 30.5, which has them pinned all the way down at 104th.

With the game being played in Atlanta this season, let's take a look at some of the home and away splits for the two teams. At home this season, Georgia Tech is averaging 34.8 points per game (42nd) and allowing 32 points per game on defense (116th). On the road, Georgia is averaging 36.3 points per game (8th) and allowing 17.5 points per game on defense (10th).

With Mike Bobo in his first season back as offensive coordinator at Georgia this season, the Bulldogs have quickly become one of the best offenses in the sport. With that being said, Georgia Tech has played three opponents with a top-30 scoring offense this year. They went 1-2 against those teams and allowed an average of 44.3 points per game. Georgia will be the first team they have played this season that currently has a top-15 scoring offense in college football.

Both offensive lines have played well when it comes to protecting the quarterback this season but tackles for loss allowed this season is where the two are really separated. Georgia ranks 11th as they are allowing an average of 3.9 tackles for loss per game. Georgia Tech ranks 61st allowing 5.4 per game. If Tech is constantly playing behind the sticks on Saturday, they're going to have a tough time finding success on offense against a stout defense like Georgia's.

The Yellow Jackets are much improved on offense this season, but they have had a hard time scoring points in the red zone area this year, especially compared to Georgia. The Bulldogs rank 10th for red zone conversion rate this season (93.5%). Their 42 touchdowns in the red zone are the third most in the country and still have the most red zone trips in the country. Georgia Tech ranks 77th in the red zone as they are scoring 82.7% of the time.

Based on the numbers, it looks like Georgia can expect to take care of business once again on Saturday and head into their SEC Championship game matchup against Alabama on a high note.
