Final Thoughts: Georgia's DB Room Will Be Key Fixture to Potential Three-Peat
The dust has long settled since April 15th's G-Day Scrimmage for the Georgia Bulldogs. The roster has seen movements from a depth chart standpoint, but they've seen five players depart the roster via the Transfer Portal since its opening on the 15th as well, including starting defensive tackle Bear Alexander. After enough time to evaluate everything that happened on Saturday (and since) let's talk.
I spend an abnormal amount of time evaluating film for a football team I cannot directly impact, so there's only one place to unload all those thoughts via text. So, here you have it.
Defensive Backs
Corners
Kamari Lassiter has the potential to be the next "first-round" caliber corner to come out of Georgia. At nearly 6'0, 190 pounds, Lassiter was referred to as Georgia's "best tackler" a year ago as a first-year starter by head coach Kirby Smart. He's the known commodity in this discussion, if No. 3 is healthy, he's the No. 1 corner on this roster and played as such during the spring game.
The opposite side of Lassiter, however? That's the question that was present entering spring ball, and it's the same question lingering leaving spring ball. As of the publishing of this article, Georgia hasn't seen action from any of the potential candidates via the Transfer Portal, so all involved must still believe they have as much of a chance of being the guy as the next. Nyland Green got the initial start alongside Lassiter, but at times both Daylen Everette and Julian Humphrey got reps with the "one's unit" and sources indicated that Smoke Bouie and AJ Harris have been in the mix as well. It's not a matter of talent, it's a matter of selection it seems at the position.
Safety/Nickel
This is where the discussion evolves from "who is better" to "what is better" for this defense. At the corner spot it's pretty simple, pick the best two players, and let's go. At safety and STAR, the best combination of three players may differ from week to week, and the preparation for that possibility was shown this spring.
Georgia may need to be a two-high, man-to-man football team against Tennessee this fall. But they may have to be a single high, "pressure the box" football team against an opponent like OIe Miss. It's been the beauty of Kirby Smart defenses, the ability to differ week to week, but to be different in pursuit of perfection.
Javon Bullard's switch to safety is a dead giveaway of this pursuit. Bullard moving to safety has opened the doors at STAR for an experienced and savvy zone football player like Tykee Smith, but it's also provided an opportunity for a freak-of-nature, man-to-man football player like Joenel Aguerro at the STAR spot as well. When you have creative defensive back minds like Will Muschamp and Kirby Smart at the helm, the best thing you can do is strap them with the most diverse group of talents they can possess, this roster has exactly that.
You'll see at least six guys play a lot this fall based on everything we learned this spring. Malaki Starks, Javon Bullard, David Daniel-Sissavahn, Tykee Smith, Joenel Aguero, and Dan Jackson.
In a season where they no longer seemingly have a sure-fire first-round defensive lineman for the first time in three seasons, it's perhaps the most talented defensive back group they've had to date.
