How Secure is Carson Beck's Job as Georgia's Starting Quarterback?

The Georgia Bulldogs finally have their starting quarterback for the 2023 season, but does that mean that he will finish the season as the starter as well?

This Saturday, Georgia Football head coach Kirby Smart answered one of Georgia's biggest questions heading into the 2023 season as he announced that senior Carson Beck would be the team's signal caller for the 2023 season. While Beck's emergence as the Bulldogs' starter comes as a surprise to very few, there now lies a different question. "How secure is Beck's role as the starting quarterback?"

Given Beck's tremendous skillset and hype surrounding his 2023 season, it is hard to believe that the Jacksonville, Florida native will be on "thin ice" when he takes the field as the Bulldogs starter on Sept. 2. However, there is a very interesting statistic surrounding quarterbacks under Kirby Smart that may indicate Beck's position is not as "locked up" as one may think.

During his eight-year tenure as Georgia's head coach, Kirby Smart has named a total of six different players to begin the season as Georgia's starting quarterback. Of those six, only two quarterbacks finished their respective seasons as starters. Those two were Jake Fromm, who held the starting job throughout Georgia's 2017 & 2018 seasons. And Stetson Bennett, who started in all 15 games during Georgia's 2022 national championship run.

While this statistic can certainly be alarming, it can also be somewhat misleading as both JT Daniels and Jacob Eason lost their starting roles due to early injuries in their respective seasons through no fault of their own. Meanwhile, Dwan Mathis and Greyson Lambert were both benched during their very first games when the offense was producing at an unsatisfactory level.

So while finishing the season that you start seems to be a fairly uncommon trend amongst Georgia quarterbacks, it is not always entirely due to a lack of skill at the position. In short, should Beck play be able to live up to expectations and remain healthy. He will almost undoubtedly remain the Bulldogs' starter for the 2023 season.
