Kirby Smart Describes What He Will be Looking for During UGA Quarterback Battle
In his first address to the media since SEC Media Days, Kirby Smart provided updates on his team and the progress in which he hopes to see during the Bulldogs 2023 fall camp. Apart from injury updates and roster changes, Smart also spoke on what might be the most anticipated roster update of Georgia's 2023 season. The quarterback battle.
While Smart unsurprisingly did not provide any details as to who was winning the battle. He did mention what he would be looking for from the three quarterbacks who were competing for the starting position.
"I want to see them [the quarterbacks] be where their feet are... Not to overwhelm themselves with results, but to overwhelm themselves with the process of getting better. They're going to get a lot of reps in the next 25 practices and they're going to get a chance to compete in the next 25 practices."

The three quarterbacks who were competing for the starting role (Gunner Stockton, Brock Vandagriff, and Carson Beck) each possess a unique skill set and playing style that they were all able to put on display during Georgia's spring game earlier this year. Smart stated that he wanted each player to utilize those skill sets to improve their game, as well as understand the offense.
"Each one of them [the quarterbacks] have individual things they need to work on. But for the whole, I want to see them manage and understand the offense. Get people lined up and execute. The guy that does that best in critical situations will be the guy that becomes our quarterback."
-Kirby Smart
Smart, along with newly promoted offensive coordinator Mike Bobo will continue to assess their quarterback battle as fall practices continue and will likely come to a decision before their first official game on Sept. 2 against UT Martin.
