Rece Davis Tabs Michigan as No. 1 Team in College Football
The 2023 college football season is rapidly approaching as we creep into the month of June, and teams across the nation ramp up preparation for another fight at the national title. The Georgia Bulldogs are the reigning back-to-back national champs, and many have them tabbed as the favorite to do it for a third time. But as things currently sit in late June, not everyone sees it that way.
The Bulldogs experienced some changes around its program this offseason with the two biggest being former starting quarterback Stetson Bennett joining the NFL and offensive coordinator Todd Monken doing the same. Rolling out a fresh starting quarterback can create a cause for some questions, especially in the offseason, and that's exactly what ESPN College Gameday's host, Rece Davis, had to say about the subject.
Davis went on to claim that Michigan is his preseason No. 1, but not because they have the best roster in the sport, but because they have answers right now that other programs don't. "Before the Georgia fans call in and say that I don't know what I am talking about. Georgia has a better roster top to bottom there's no question about that. But I want to see the quarterback play, and I don't think that's too much to ask," Davis said.
Interestingly enough, this comes the same week that reports surfaced of Michigan having a "beat Georgia" practice period implemented into their daily plans for the program. A major compliment for the Bulldogs for another college football powerhouse to be making it an emphasis that they too can hopefully reach the pinnacle of the sport like Georgia has.
Head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo have not officially tabbed a starter for the 2023 season and likely won't until kickoff time for their week one matchup against UT-Martin rolls around. All signs seem to point to Carson Beck stepping into the spotlight and taking over the reins of the offense as of right now though.
Preseason rankings of course don't hold any water and are nothing more than a talking point while college fans all over patiently wait for the season to get rolling, but knowing where the public opinion, especially someone like Davis', stands is still interesting to take in. Georgia and Michigan are the only two teams to have made the last two college football playoffs, and both are in good standing to make it back again in 2023.
