NFL Draft Profile: Will Jalen Carter be the No.1 Overall Pick?

Will Jalen Carter make history and become just the 5th No.1 overall pick in Georgia Football History?

After two Georgia defensive linemen were taken in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Many fans believed that the University of Georgia had exhausted its talent at the position. However, experts were more than aware of the upcoming junior from Apopka, Florida.

Jalen Carter, better known by some as "The Breadman" signed with the University of Georgia as a 5-star recruit in the Bulldog's 2020 class. Hindered by the COVID-19 virus, Carter saw limited action during his freshman year but still managed to finish with 14 total tackles. He would then have a much-increased role in the Dawgs' 2021 elite defense which had five defensive players taken in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Though his talents were certainly well known, Carter broke onto the national scene in the 2022 season as the star of the Bulldogs' defensive line. Missing a few games with injuries, the junior finished with 32 tackles, 3 sacks, and 3 pass deflections.

Listed at 6"3, 300 pounds, Carter possesses a quick first step with an aggressive drive that almost demands a double team every play. His interior run-stopping abilities, paired with his relentless pass rush make him arguably the best "non-quarterback" prospect in this year's draft.

Given that the Chicago Bears currently hold the No.1 overall pick, it is highly unlikely that they will select a quarterback. This means that a successful combine should almost undoubtedly lock up a No.1 overall pick for Carter. Securing the Bulldogs' second straight No.1 overall pick in as many seasons.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah currently has Carter ranked the No. 1 player on his NFL Draft Big Board.

"Carter is a highly disruptive player with the versatility to line up at any position along the defensive front. Against the pass, he has an explosive first step and understands how to work through the edges of blockers. He jars opponents with his initial strike before clearing his hips and closing in on the quarterback. He has the change-of-direction ability of a player 40-to-50 pounds lighter." - Daniel Jeremiah on Jalen Carter
