Georgia Tech Defeats Gardner Webb 22-11 in Seven Innings

The offense was again fantastic for the Yellow Jackets

The Georgia Tech offense could not be stopped last night in game on against Gardner-Webb and today, the Yellow Jackets are going to hope for more runs scored today as they look to win the series today.

John Giesler had a monster game last night, having three RBIs and Jackson Finley did him one better by having five. Luke Schmolke had some rough moments early in the game on the mound but was able to settle in and navigate the Gardner-Webb lineup.

Terry Busse got the start for the Yellow Jackets today and here is how Georgia Tech lined up:

1. 2B- Kristian Campbell

2. CF- Jake DeLeo

3. RF- Stephen Reid

4. IF- Angelo Dispigna

5. 1B- John Giesler

6. 3B- Drew Compton

7. DH- Jackson Finley

8. SS- Jadyn Jackson

9. C- Tyler Minnick

Busse worked the first inning only allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Campbell got things going for the Yellow Jackets' offense with a leadoff triple and then a sac fly from DeLeo gave GT a 1-0 lead. Reid was then hit by a pitch and Dispigna was walked, which led to an early pitching change for Gardner-Webb. Giesler continued his great weekend by hitting an RBI single to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead in the 1st.

The scoring did not stop there though.

After Compton struck out, Finley came up to bat and hit a 2-RBI double to make it a 4-0 game. Finley had five RBIs in last night's game and continued his great weekend. Jackson came through with an RBI single to make it 5-0 and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on an error to make it 6-0. It was a great 1st inning to help give Busse plenty of room to work with.

Then, Busse got in big trouble in the top of the 2nd.

Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Gardner-Webb, but two strikeouts ended the inning and the Yellow Jackets still led 6-0.

After a scoreless bottom of the second for GT, Busse let walks get him in more trouble in the 3rd and it cost him this time.

A leadoff walk started the inning and then after getting their first out, another walk and then a single loaded the bases. A 2-RBI double from Gardner-Webb cut the lead to 6-2. Another runner scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3, but the bleeding stopped there and Busse struck out the final batter.

The GT offense made up for the runs allowed, however.

Dispigna walked to start the inning and then advanced to second on a ground out from Giesler. Compton was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and then Finley smashed a three-run home run to give Georgia Tech a 9-3 lead.

Three straight walks got the bases loaded for GT, but Reid struck out to end the 3rd.

Busse returned for the 4th and did not start off well.

The leadoff runner reached on an error and then he hit the next batter to put runners on first and second with no outs. A single loaded the bases and then after getting the runner out at home on a single, Busse gave up a bases loaded walk to make it 9-4 and his day was done. Dawson Brown was the pitcher who replaced him.

GW proceeded to score on a wild pitch to make it 9-5 and then a ground out allowed another runner to score to make it 9-6. An RBI single scored another run to make it 9-7 before Brown was able to get out of the inning. It was a four-run inning for Gardner-Webb to make it a two-run game.

But like in previous innings, Georgia Tech's offense went to work to make up for the runs the pitching was giving up.

Dispigna got things going with a leadoff walk and then stole second. Giesler walked to give them two runners. After Compton and Finley were out, Gardner-Webb made a pitching change. Jackson had a 2-RBI double to make it 11-7, Minnick had an RBI single to make it 12-7, and a bases-loaded walk made it 13-7 before GW could get the next out. The Yellow Jackets had it back to a six-run lead heading to the 5th.

Brown was able to get through the 5th inning without a run allowed.

At the bottom of the 5th, Giesler started things off with a leadoff single and then he stole second. Compton had an RBI double to make make it 14-7 and then the star of the weekend, Jackson Finley, hit another two-run home run to make it 16-7.

Minnick hit a double to put another runner in scoring position and Campbell brought him home with an RBI double to make it 17-7. A DeLeo RBI single gave Georgia Tech an 18-7 lead heading to the 6th inning.

But the Georgia Tech pitching would have another bad inning at the top of the 6th.

Brown gave up a solo home run to make it 18-8 and then hit a batter then walked one to put two runners on with one out. After a strikeout to give them two outs, GW hit a 2-RBI double and then an RBI single to give them 11 runs. Dalton Smith would replace Brown and got the final out, but it was a tough day for the first two pitchers on the mound for Georgia Tech.

The game ended after seven innings and Georgia Tech won 22-11.

Game three is tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
