Georgia Tech Dominates Gardner-Webb In Game One of Series
Georgia Tech Baseball switched it up tonight and instead of an ACC weekend series, the Yellow Jackets are going to be taking on Gardner-Webb this weekend. GT is looking for their third straight win after winning the final game of their last series against Miami and defeating Mercer on Tuesday.
The win against the Bears earlier this week came due to a powerful grand slam by Drew Compton and a terrific outing from Camron Hill on the mound.
Luke Schmolke got the start for the Yellow Jackets tonight and here was the lineup for Georgia Tech:
1. 2B- Kristian Campbell
2. CF- Jake DeLeo
3. RF- Stephen Reid
4. IF- Angelo Dispigna
5. 1B- John Geisler
6. 3B- Drew Compton
7. DH- Jackson Finley
8. C- Jack Rubenstein
9. SS- Jadyn Jackson
For Schmolke, it did not start off well on the mound but it could have been worse.
After getting the first batter of the game out, the Yellow Jackets pitcher allowed a solo home run to give Gardner-Webb an early 1-0 lead. He did get the next two batters out, but giving up home runs has clearly been an issue for Georgia Tech this season, and it continued tonight.
The Yellow Jackets offense struck back quickly though. Campbell had a leadoff walk and then DeLeo reached on a fielders choice, although Campbell was out at second. DeLeo reached second on a wild pitch and then after a Reid strikeout, Giesler came through with an RBI single to tie the game.
After Compton walked to put two runners on, Finley had a 2-RBI double to give GT a 3-1 lead.
The lead did not last long though.
After a leadoff walk, Schmolke gave up another home run and this time it let Gardner-Webb tie the game 3-3.
After allowing a double, Schmolke did strike out the final three batters, but it was still another poor inning for the Yellow Jackets pitcher.
After a leadoff single from Jackson (he advanced to second on an error), Campbell broke the tie with an RBI single to make it 4-3. DeLeo reached on a fielders choice that got Campbell out at second and that paved the way for Stephen Reid to hit a 2-run home run to extend the lead to 6-3.
Schmolke got through the third inning 1-2-3 and that meant the offense could go back to work.
Finley got the inning started with a solo home run and then Rubenstein tripled to put a runner in scoring position. Campbell hit a sac fly to make it 8-3 and GT had a five-run lead heading to the 4th.
Schmolke gave up a walk and double in the 4th, but got out of the inning due to his strikeout ability.
Giesler got a two-out home run to push the lead to 9-3 in the 4th.
In the 5th inning, Ben King came in to replace Schmolke. He struck out his first two batters but surrendered a solo home run to cut the lead to 9-4.
It was a blowout the rest of the way thanks to the Georgia Tech offense and improved pitching. The Yellow Jackets would score 15 runs thanks to big hits from Compton and Giesler (who had a monster night). The final score was 15-5 and it was a pretty easy night for the Yellow Jackets.
It was a three-RBI night from Giesler and five from Finley. The pitching settled down after a tough start and bounced back to keep Gardner-Webb at five runs.
The win moves Georgia Tech to 24-18 this season.
Game two of the series is set for tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
