Georgia Tech Routed By Georgia 16-6 In Game Two Of Series
Georgia Tech Baseball has now lost its first series of the season.
After a tough opening game loss to Georgia last night, Georgia Tech waw looking to even the series against their rival today in Atlanta.
Early mistakes cost the Yellow Jackets last night. Dawson Brown gave up seven runs in the first few innings and GT could not cash in when they had runners in scoring position. The offense made things semi-interesting in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs, but they were unable to make the Bulldogs sweat the game out.
Today, Josiah Siegel made his first start on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. Here is the lineup that Tech rolled with today:
1. CF-Jake DeLeo
2. IF- Angelo Dispigna
3. RF- Stephen Reid
4. DH-Jack Rubenstein
5. 1B- Jackson Finley
6. 2B- Nicholas Romano
7. 3B- John Geisler
8. SS-Nico Senese
9. C- Tyler Minnick
At the start of today's game, Siegel gave up a leadoff walk and a double to let UGA have runners on second and third with no outs. A strikeout and a ground out gave GT just one more out to go to get out of the jam they created for themselves. A wild pitch was mishandled by Minnick and UGA scored their first run and led 1-0. Siegel struck out the next batter, but UGA led 1-0 heading to the bottom of the inning.
Liam Sullivan was on the mound for the Bulldogs today and he had a great start to his game, as he sat down the Yellow Jackets lineup 1-2-3 to end the first inning.
Siegel gave up a solo home run to Will David that made the UGA lead 2-0, but that would be the only score he would allow and we went to the bottom of the inning.
Rubenstein would hit a leadoff triple and then Finley walked to give Georgia Tech runners on the corners with no outs. After a Romano strikeout, Giesler hit a sac fly to score Tech's first run of the game and cut the lead in half 2-1. Senese would then single and it looked like Tech would add on to that, but Minnick struck out looking to end the inning.
After a quick out, Siegel gave up a walk and then a single to give UGA baserunners on first and second with one out, and his day was then done. Aeden Finateri came in to replace him and then proceeded to give up a three-run home run to Parks Harber and UGA took a 5-1 lead. Finateri would get out of the inning, but he had GT in a bigger hole after that home run.
Back-to-back singles from DeLeo and Dispigna got the Yellow Jackets going in the third. Reid would line out, but DeLeo stole third to give Tech runners on the corners with Rubenstein coming up, who tripled in his last at-bat. Rubenstein did not triple again, but he got a productive out and bring home DeLeo to cut the lead to 5-2. That was it for GT in the inning and they headed to the fourth down three runs.
The 4th inning was a nightmare for GT and the Bulldogs broke the game open. A solo home run from Anderson made it 6-2 in favor of UGA. LaPlante grounded out and it looked like the Yellow Jackets would survive the inning, but a two-out double from Tate led to a two-run home run from Condon to give UGA an 8-2 lead.
After UGA put up three more runs, Tech was unable to respond and went down 1-2-3.
After a rough inning from Finateri, Cody Carwile came in to pitch for the Yellow Jackets and try to keep the Bulldog's offense in check. After one early out, Carwile hit Gonzalez with a pitch and then a wild pitch advanced him to 2nd, which proved to be costly because Murillo came up to bat with two outs and hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 9-2.
Tech again failed to respond in the bottom of the 5th and went down 1-2-3.
It was a bloodbath the rest of the way. Georgia pup up 16 runs before the 9th inning and led 16-3 going into the final frame. The highlight of the game for Georgia Tech was a three-run home run from Carsten Sabathia in the bottom of the 9th to make it a 16-6 game, but that would be it.
The series concludes tomorrow at Coolray Field, with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
