Georgia Tech Basketball vs Boston College: Preview And Prediction

Can Georgia Tech close out their regular season with a win over BC?

It might be too little too late for Georgia Tech basketball, but they are showing signs of life and playing pretty well down the stretch. They head into Saturday's regular-season finale against Boston College as winners of five of their last seven and it could just as easily be a seven-game winning streak if they found a way to close out close games against Wake Forest and Pitt.

While the Yellow Jackets have a nice win over Miami, I would argue the win against Syracuse is actually their best performance of the season, especially on the offensive end. Tech hit 18 threes and Ja'von Franklin had the first triple-double for a Georgia Tech player since 2011. The starting unit for this team (Lance Terry, Miles Kelly, Kyle Sturdivant, Deebo Coleman, and Franklin) is playing big minutes, but it is playing well, especially on offense. This team has found something with this unit and they are looking to carry that into Sunday.

Boston College (15-15, 9-10 ACC), one of the surprise teams in the ACC this season after being picked to finish 13th. enters Saturday’s game playing for the ninth seed in the ACC Tournament and a bye out of the Tuesday opening round. The Eagles, currently tied with Syracuse at 9-10, are 9-6 at home this season and are riding a three-game winning streak.

Georgia Tech is locked into the 13th seed for next Week’s ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The Yellow Jackets will play the loser of Saturday’s game between Florida State and Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. The Seminoles and Hokies are tied at 7-12, two games ahead of the Yellow Jackets, with the winner gaining the 11th seed and the loser, seeded 12th (Per Georgia Tech PR).

Tech’s last back-to-back ACC road wins came at Miami and Virginia Tech in the 2020-21 season. The Yellow Jackets have won their last two games against Boston College at the Conte Forum (Per Georgia Tech PR).

Georgia Tech and Boston College have not played each other this season.

The Eagles come into this game ranking 14th in the ACC in offense, averaging 66.4 PPG and they rank 13th in field goal percentage. They enter this game 15th in the ACC in three-point field goals made. Georgia Tech is solid defensively on the perimeter, as they continue to lead the ACC in three-point defense and is 19th nationally, allowing 30.0 percent from distance.

Defensively, BC is sixth in the ACC in PPG allowed.

In the latest Kenpom rankings, Boston College is 165th and Georgia Tech is 172nd.

Tech has achieved ACC season highs in field goal percentage in each of its last three games (47.3 vs. Pittsburgh, 48.2 vs. Louisville, 50.7 vs. Syracuse). The Jackets have shot better than Tuesday’s 50.7 percent only twice (North Alabama, Alabama State) all season. Tech has scored 70 points or more in six of its last seven games (Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Florida Tech, Louisville, Syracuse). The Yellow Jackets are 11-2 this season when scoring 70 or more points (5-2 in the ACC), and 2-15 when failing to reach 70 (Per Georgia Tech PR)

Tech has exceeded 100 points per 100 possessions (KenPom offensive efficiency rating) in each of its last seven games, the Yellow Jackets’ longest such streak this season. There are only two longer streaks on record, 10 straight games by Tech’s ACC title team of 2020-21 and two eight-game streaks by the 2006-07 team. Tech has outshot seven of its last eight opponents from the floor, holding them collectively to 42.7 percent overall, 28.1 percent from three-point range. The Yellow Jackets are 12-2 this season when they have a higher field goal percentage (Per Georgia Tech PR).

Prediction

Georgia Tech Basketball
Can Georgia Tech beat Boston College on the road Saturday? / Georgia Tech Athletics

Heading into the ACC Tournament next week, Georgia Tech is playing well and I expect that to continue tomorrow. Boston College is a tough team and has played well this season considering their expectations, but I think the Yellow Jackets' defense can shut down the Eagles' attack and I think Terry, Kelly, and Franklin are going to continue to play well. Give me a Georgia Tech win to give them more momentum heading into Greensboro next week.

Final Score: Georgia Tech 84, Boston College 80
