Georgia Tech WBB Upsets No. 15 NC State

Georgia Tech pulls an upset against one of the league's best teams

Georgia Tech turned in their best performance of the season and they were rewarded with beating one of the best teams in the country.

NC State has been one of the top teams in the conference in recent seasons and has a very good offense. Georgia Tech slowed them down on defense and held them to just 62 points, 12 below their season average.

NC State started out fast during the game and led 16-10 in the first quarter, but a big run by Georgia Tech was able to give the Yellow Jackets back the lead. Georgia Tech went on a 13-2 run to end the quarter and led 23-18 after one. Tonie Morgan has been fantastic lately and she had nine points in the first quarter. Kayla Blackshear and Cam Swartz also had a nice opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the offense for the Yellow Jackets slowed down and was held to ten points. NC State won the quarter 15-10 and the game was tied at 33-33 at the half. The second quarter was defined by runs by both teams. NC State started out on a 12-0 run to take a 30-23 lead, but Georgia Tech finished on a 10-3 run to tie the game at halftime.

What was already a tight game carried on in a similar fashion in the third quarter. Instead of trading runs like the first couple of quarters, both teams were trading buckets back and forth. Morgan, Swartz, Bianca Jackson, and Avyonce Carter led the way for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech led by one leading into the last quarter and it was going to take a clutch performance to pull this win out. The game was tied 53-53 and that is when Georgia Tech made their final run. Clutch free throws by Nerea Hermosa and Swartz sealed the victory for the Yellow Jackets over the No. 15 team in the country.

Morgan finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Swartz had 12 points, and Hermosa finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

This is a massive win for the team and head coach Nell Fortner. This team has had some ups and downs, but this win is their second in a row and it could be what is needed to spark a big run down the second half of the season.

Georgia Tech is back in action on Sunday at Miami. The game will tip off 12:00 p.m.
