Jose Alvarado Named MVP Of The 2023 Rising Stars Game
What a great way to kick off the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend,
The Rising Stars Game tonight was the start of All-Star weekend and the MVP of the game was a familiar face for Georgia Tech fans.
Jose Alvarado was selected for this game as one of the best second-year players in the NBA and by the end of it, he was the most valuable player. He brought a ton of energy to the floor (as he does every night) and led his team to victory, including this game-winning shot:
Here is a brief summary from NBA.com on how the Rising Stars game works:
"The 21 NBA players, selected by NBA assistant coaches, will be drafted onto three seven-player teams. The seven NBA G League players, selected by the NBA league office, will comprise the fourth team.
To select the 21 NBA player participants, each NBA team submitted a rookie ballot and a sophomore ballot featuring four frontcourt players, four guards, and two additional players of any position, in order of preference. Coaches were not allowed to vote for any player on their team.
Points were awarded based on where a player was ranked on each ballot, and the players with the highest total points made the cut."
Here is the full breakdown of the three-game mini-tournament, per NBA.com:
All three games will be played to a Final Target Score, which means the game will end on a made basket or free throw rather than time expiring.
The two semifinal games — Game 1 and Game 2 — will be played to a Final Target Score of 40.
The final game, featuring the winners, will be played to a Final Target Score of 25 to determine the tournament champion.
- Game 1: Team A vs. Team B
- Game 2: Team C vs. Team D
- Game 3: Winner of Game 1 vs. Winner of Game 2
Alvarado and "Team Pau" made it to the final game and he was the biggest reason why.
Here was the full roster for Team Pau:
Paolo Banchero- Magic
Bennedict Mathurin- Pacers
Jaden Ivey- Pistons
Scottie Barnes- Raptors
Jose Alvarado- Pelicans
Keegan Murray- Kings
Andrew Nembhard- Pacers
Alvarado's team made it to the final game and he nailed the game-winning basket and was awarded the MVP.
This season for the New Orleans Pelicans, Alvarado has been averaging 9.1 points per game, 3.1 assists per game, shooting 40% from the floor, and averaging a steal per game. He is an important part of the Pelican's core and he will hope to help them make a deep playoff run in April.
The Pelicans are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference.
