Georgia Tech vs. Ole Miss: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
Georgia Tech got within seven points of Ole Miss tonight in the 4th quarter, but the defense could not hold up against a high-powered Rebels attack and Georgia Tech is now 1-2 this season.
The Yellow Jackets fought hard in this game, battling back from a 24-3 deficit to cut the game to a touchdown. Ole Miss finished with nearly 600 yards on offense and completely took over the game once Georgia Tech got the lead to within a touchdown.
So what are the good, the bad, and the ugly from the loss to Ole Miss?
The Good
- Haynes King played another clean game, King finished 28-41 for 307 yards and two touchdowns. King has played like one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC through three games and he has been a great story. He has had to perform at his best with the defense playing poorly and he has answered the call. The 28 completions are tied for the fourth-most in Georgia Tech single-game history and are tied for the third-most completions without an interception in school history
- Eric Singleton Jr. continues to impress. He had the most targets on the team tonight with 11 and he hauled in five of them for 97 yards, including a 51-yard catch in the second half. He has been perhaps the best receiver on this team this season and he continues to get better.
- No turnovers
- Georgia Tech was 11-20 on third down
- The red zone issues got better and GT finished 4-5 there
- No penalties
- The offense finished with 474 yards
The Bad
- The running game could not get going consistently. Finishing with 167 yards is not terrible, but averaging less than four yards per carry is less than ideal.
- Two sacks allowed. Considering how bad the line was last year, they do look improved, but giving up two sacks in a game is never a good thing
The Ugly
- The defense
- A loss is always ugly
- Ole Miss ran for 299 yards, including 136 from quarterback Jaxson Dart. The Rebels averaged over eight yards per carry. The Yellow Jackets have perhaps the worst run defense in the country and if they can't get it fixed, it could cost them a bowl game birth.
- Ole Miss averaged 25 yards per completion
- Only one sack by the defense, their first of the season.
- Ole Miss averaged nearly 10 yards per play
- Ole Miss receiver Jordan Watkins had over 100 yards on four catches.
- The fake punt was a terrible call. In that situation, if you are going to go for it, leave the offense on the field. The better decision might have been to go ahead and punt it
- Giving up 38 points in the second half
- The blocked field goal on the first possession. The special teams woes continue for Georgia Tech, as they have had a miscue in each game so far, whether it was a missed field goal or a block like in this game
- This team is now 1-2. Most thought they would be after three games, but the non-improvement by the defense is starting to give this season a bleak look. This team is improved on offense, but that can only take you so far. Next week's game against Wake Forest could be the game that decides whether they go to a bowl game or not.
