Kevin Sherrer discusses why he chose to come to Georgia Tech: "This is a great place that is going in the right direction"
New Georgia Tech co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Kevin Sherrer has been around SEC programs like Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee, as well as a stint in the NFL. He was hired during the offseason by Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key to help coordinate the defense alongside Andrew Thacker, as well as coach the linebackers.
Yesterday after practice, Sherrer got a chance to speak to the media and was asked why he chose to come to Georgia Tech, as well as his relationship with Key and here is what he had to say:
"I have known Coach Key since probably late December, I met him a few times and did not really know him that well, (quarterbacks coach and co-oc) Chris Weinke and I coached together at Tennessee and so that was kind of the connection to getting here.
Why did I want to come here? When I first... people that know him that know me... we are similar in a lot of ways and we talked on the phone and it probably took like 30 seconds to where I was like, if this works out, I am pretty sure that is where I would like to go work because we spend a lot of time here, a lot of time away from our families, a lot more time with each other than our families, but you have to enjoy the people that you are around, there is a big difference in that.
This is a great place and it is going in the right direction with him in charge and I am excited about it. Not just Coach Key, but the rest of the staff, we have a great coaching staff, great people, great families and that was evident through him after I did research on the people that were in the building so it is important to me.
I am not old old but I am older so I look at the people I work with and the places more than I look at the other parts that are involved in this business."
Sherrer seems to think this program is heading in the right direction under Key and I think he could be a big help to this defense this year.
As far as the position he is coaching, Sherrer is going to have to replace two All-ACC players, Charlie Thomas, and Ace Eley, and they are going to be relying on a mix of guys that have been with the program like Trenilyas Tatum, Tyson Meiguez, and Kyle Efford, as well as transfers like Andre White JR (Texas A&M), Braelen Oliver (Minnesota), and Paul Moala (Notre Dame and Idaho). Eley and Thomas are not going to be easy to replace, but Sherrer has some talent to work with at the position.
Georgia Tech is going to be kicking off its 2023 season against Louisville on Sept. 1st at 7:30 on ESPN.
