If you had asked anyone that watches golf, most would have said that the round one leader in this year's British Open would have been Scotter Scheffler, John Rahm, or Rory McIlroy. Those are the top golfers in the world right now and playing great heading into the tournament.

So far, though, Georgia Tech golfer Christo Lamprecht is tied for first at this year's Open Championship, alongside Tommy Fleetwood.

Lamprecht was great in the first round today, finishing -5 for the day and still at the top of the leaderboard. Lamprecht is an amateur golfer and a rising senior at Georgia Tech and he recorded the third-lowest round recorded by an amateur in The Open Championship history and it was also the second-lowest opening round in history by an amateur at the Open Championship according to ESPN stats and info.

It was a fantastic round for Lamprecht, who has been one of the best young golfers while at Georgia Tech.

Lamprecht is a two-time All-American and two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer at Tech (2022, 2023). He is the No. 6 amateur player in the world according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking and won The Amateur Championship in June and earned an invitation to the 2023 Open Championship, as well as the 2024 U.S. Open and Masters. Lamprecht is the second native of South Africa to enrolled in Tech’s golf program, following Kyle Scott (2010-11) (stats and info courtesy of ramblinwreck.com).

There are still three rounds left to play of course, but it was a sensational opening round for Lamprecht. Coming off of Chris Eubanks's magical run at Wimbledon, it has been a great summer for current or former Georgia Tech athletes on the world's biggest stage.

Lamprecht is set to tee off in round two at 7:53 A.M. ET tomorrow morning.
