The 2023-24 college basketball season is right around the corner, and the Big Ten announced its preseason all-conference team and player of the year on Friday, chosen by a select media panel.

Purdue center Zach Edey is the reigning National and Big Ten Player of the Year after averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game on 60.7 percent shooting.

As expected, Edey was named Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, and was one of four unanimous selections to the preseason All-Big Ten team, along with Illinois guard Terrence Shannon Jr., Maryland guard Jahmir Young and Northwestern guard Boo Buie

From an Indiana standpoint, sixth-year point guard Xavier Johnson likely had the best chance to make the preseason All-Big Ten team, but he was ultimately left off. Johnson played just 11 games last season due to a broken foot, but he averaged 12.1 points, 5.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game on 38.3 percent 3-point shooting during the 2021-22 season.

The Big Ten is hosting its annual media days next Monday and Tuesday at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., where coaches and players from all 14 teams will speak.
