5-Star Guard Boogie Fland Narrows List To Three Schools

Boogie Fland has been one of Indiana coach Mike Woodson's top recruiting priorities in the class of 2024, and the five-star guard recently said he's focused on Indiana, Kentucky and Alabama.

Johnuel "Boogie" Fland, a five-star guard in the class of 2024, is down to three schools.

“Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama are the schools pushing hard to get me and I’m focused on those three schools,” Fland told Dushawn London of 247 Sports.

Indiana coach Mike Woodson has visited Fland in New York twice within the last three weeks, including speaking at a coaches clinic at Fland's high school, Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains, N.Y. Fland took an official visit to Indiana in June.

Fland would be a huge get for the Hoosiers. A 6-foot-3, 165-pound guard, Fland is a  five-star recruit according to most sites, ranked No. 7 in the nation by Rivals, No. 15 by On3 and No. 18 in the ESPN Top 100. He's a four-star recruit in 247 Sports' opinion, ranked No. 33 in the nation.

He averaged 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game during 23 games for the PSA Cardinals during 22 games of 2023 Nike EYBL play this offseason, according to a source with EYBL tracking data.

Woodson's pursuit of Fland has made Indiana a finalist, but he has some serious competition to fend off.

Kentucky coach John Calipari recruited the nation's No. 1 class in 2023, highlighted four five-star recruits, three of which are ranked in the top six. Calipari has also secured a commitment from class of 2024 center Somto Cyril, a four-star center. Kentucky has underachieved the last few seasons, but Calipari is always a threat on the recruiting trail.

Alabama coach Nate Oats is coming off a regular season SEC title in 2022-23. The Crimson Tide earned the No. 1 overall seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, but were upset in the Sweet 16 by No. 5 seed San Diego State, who ultimately lost to UConn in the national championship. Oats welcomes in the nation's No. 16 recruiting class in 2023, and he recently secured a commitment from class of 2024 power forward Aiden Sherrell, a four-star recruit.

Indiana does not have any commitments in the class of 2024 so far, but Woodson is firmly in the mix for five-stars Liam McNeeley and Boogie Fland. Indiana has also hosted official visits for Derik Queen, Curtis Givens III and Tyler Betsey, who remain uncommitted. Woodson brings in the nation's No. 18 recruiting class of 2023, consisting of five-star forward Mackenzie Mgbako and four-star guards Gabe Cupps and Jakai Newton.
