Two Indiana Recruiting Targets Make 2023 USA Men's U19 National Team
USA Basketball announced Friday the 2023 USA Men’s U19 National Team, which included two Indiana recruiting targets, Dylan Harper and Asa Newell.
After five days of training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., a group of 30 invitees was whittled down to a 12-man team that will compete at the 2023 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup on June 24 to July 2 in Debrecen, Hungary.
Colorado head coach Tad Boyle is the U19 National Team's head coach, and he's joined by assistant coaches Mike Boynton Jr. from Oklahoma State and Leon Rice from Boise State. The United State has won this tournament eight times, including three of the last four competitions in 2015, 2019 and 2021.
The team consists of four high school seniors, four college freshmen and four college sophomores, all born on or after Jan. 1, 2004.
Here's the full team:
- Mark Armstrong, Villanova
- Tobe Awaka, Tennessee
- Omaha Biliew, Iowa State
- Kylan Boswell, Arizona
- Myles Colvin, Purdue
- Eric Dailey Jr., Oklahoma State
- Dylan Harper, 2024
- Ian Jackson, 2024
- Tre Johnson, 2024
- Ven-Allen Lubin, Vanderbilt
- Asa Newell, 2024
- Cody Williams, Colorado
Harper and Newell, both 2024 prospects, have been two of Indiana's top recruiting targets for over a year.
Harper took an official visit to Indiana on Nov. 13, 2022. On Jan. 31, he announced a top-five list, including Indiana, Kansas, Rutgers, Duke and Auburn.
Some consider Harper, a 6-foot-5 guard, to be the nation's best player in the class of 2024. He's ranked No. 1 overall by On3 and 247Sports, No. 2 by ESPN and No. 3 by Rivals.
Harper is the younger brother of former Rutgers forward Ron Harper Jr. and son of NBA champion point guard Ron Harper Sr. He attends Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J. and plays AAU for the New York Renaissance on the Nike EYBL circuit.
On May 16, Harper was named Nike EYBL Session III MVP after averaging 23.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.5 assists. With a 58.6 field goal percentage, Harper led his team to a 4-0 record that weekend.
"It’s the feel for the game," Jamie Shaw, On3's National Recruiting Analyst said on May 8. "Dylan Harper plays at his own pace, never rushed. He gets to his spots and delivers accurate plays off proper reads. While he’s not the most athletic player, his size, along with his balance and body control keep defenders on his hip and allow him to absorb contact in the paint. In Atlanta, he shot the 3 at a 43.7% (7-16) clip. The takeaway however, was the passing. Simply on target and on time from all levels and angles on the floor."
Indiana has also hosted an official visit for Asa Newell on Oct. 25, 2022. Newell hasn't announced his top list of schools yet, but he mentioned a group of schools that have been recruiting him the hardest
"Gonzaga, Texas, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Florida, a lot of schools," Newell told Krysten Peek, Yahoo Sports' NBA Draft analyst, on June 13. "But I think I'm going to cut down my list soon ... I feel like it's going to be someone that's going to push me every day, someone who's going to want to work. My goal is to get to the NBA, so whoever can get me there. The right fit, the right people, those are all really important. I don't want to go to a school because of the name. I want to go to a school for the right fit."
Newell, a 6-foot-9 forward, is ranked No. 8 by On3 and Rivals, No. 14 by ESPN and No. 16 by 247 Sports. He plays AAU for 1Family and attends Montverde Academy in Florida, where he's teammates with other 2024 Indiana recruiting targets like Liam McNeeley, Derik Queen and Curtis Givens.
"Asa Newell is a lengthy forward with a projectable frame," On3's scouting report says. "The frame is what you notice from the second he walks on the floor. The lefty has soft touch with range that extends beyond the three-point line, especially off the catch. The jump shot can get inconsistent, would like to see him get the balance right. He is comfortable driving left aggressively. He is an instinctive offensive rebounder, and he is not afraid to mix it up in traffic and hunt put-back dunks. Newell will need to continue developing the right hand and progressing with his middle game. Strength will also be a thing with the 6-foot-9 forward. However, with his size, skill set, and quick-twitch athleticism, when his motor runs hot, there is a lot of production he brings to the court."
