VIDEO: Indiana Basketball's Teri Moren Reacts to Earning AP National Coach of the Year
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana women's basketball coach Teri Moren earned the Associated Press National Coach of the Year award and was honored Thursday afternoon at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
Before she was whisked off to the awards ceremony, the Hoosiers' team let her know she won in a surprising reveal at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall that involved Moren's dad and sister too. It's unclear when the exact date of the surprise reveal was.
First Moren was asked a question from a reporter who then invited senior forward Mackenzie Holmes and graduate student guard Grace Berger up to the mic to ask Moren a question of their own. Berger introduced Moren's special guests, her father and sister as Holmes took the mic to pop the question.
"How does it feel to be AP Coach of the Year?" Holmes asked.
Moren paused and then said, "what?" as the team erupted in laughter and cheer. Moren's award graphic then appeared on the video board behind her.
"Wow...wasn't quite expecting that," Moren said. "It's one of those snapshot moments, right? Where we got our 189th win — this might exceed that moment.
"It only happens because I have the best staff in the country and the best players in the country. Without any of these guys, none of that's possible, but what a cool surprise."
This isn't the first honor Moren has won this season as she's fresh off of a Big Ten Coach of the Year award and Kay Yow Award presented to the Division I women's coach who embodies a winning spirit with excellent character on and off the court.
