LIVE BLOG: Follow Indiana Football vs. Louisville Week 3 Action
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – We've made it to Lucas Oil Stadium for a matchup between Indiana and Louisville at Noon ET.
Coach Tom Allen and the Hoosiers are coming off a dominant 41-7 win over Indiana State last week, following a 23-3 loss to Ohio State in the season opener. Coach Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals completed a comeback win against Georgia Tech in the season opener, then manhandled Murray State in a 56-0 win.
Follow along with our live blog where we'll post updates and opinions throughout the game, live from the Lucas Oil Stadium press box.
3:02 p.m. – Louisville picks up a first down, which allows them to kneel out the clock. FINAL: Louisville 21, Indiana 14
2:58 p.m. – Plummer dropped back to pass on 3rd and 9. Nothing was open, so he scrambled right and picked up 20 yards on the ground. Louisville was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, pushing them back 15 yards, but it's still a first down. With 2:12 left in the game, Indiana might not be able to get the ball back before it's over.
2:51 p.m. – On 4th and 18 inches at the goal line, Jackson handed it to Josh Henderson, who was tackled short of the end zone. That play never really had a chance. Louisville clings to a 21-14 lead with 4:38 left in the game.
2:50 p.m. – After review, they ruled Jackson down at the one-and-a-half-foot line.
2:47 p.m. – Tayven Jackson scrambled on 3rd down and dove for the pylon. He hit the pylon with the ball, but was ruled down short of the goal line. They'll review this.
2:43 p.m. – OC Walt Bell lined up half the offensive line near the sideline on the next play, leaving just three linemen near the ball. It was risky, but it led to a 10-yard gain from Jaylin Lucas. Camper drew a pass interference penalty on the next play, setting up 1st and Goal from the five.
2:41 p.m. – Jackson makes a perfect pass deep down the right sideline to Cam Camper for a 41-yard gain. That's one of, if not the best throw of his young Indiana career.
2:38 p.m. – On 3rd and 5, Andre Carter brought pressure on Plummer, who had to heave the ball out of bounds. That's a big stop for the Indiana defense. I'm a bit surprised Brohm didn't go for it there on 4th and 5 from the Indiana 40, as a touchdown could essentially put the game away. In the end, he trusted the punter, and Indiana takes over on its own 10-yard line with 8:28 to play.
2:35 p.m. – Louisville attempted some trickery, but Aaron Casey completely blew it up. Louisville ran an end around, then wanted to pitch it back the other way, but Casey tackled both guys.
2:30 p.m. – Jackson hit Omar Cooper for an 8-yard gain, but it's short of the first-down marker, forcing an Indiana punt with about 11 minutes left in the game.
2:25 p.m. – A nice open-field tackle from Jamari Sharpe makes it 4th and 15, forcing a Louisville punt. Jaylin Lucas let it bounce, so Indiana will take over at its own 14-yard line with a chance to tie the game with a touchdown.
2:23 p.m. – Plummer converts 3rd and 5 with a 12-yard completion, bringing Louisville across midfield. Aaron Casey and Phillip Blidi smothered Plummer on the next play, but he was able to flick the ball forward for an incomplete pass. Tom Allen is livid on the sideline, begging for an intentional grounding penalty. After some discussion, the officials agreed and threw the flag.
2:11 p.m. – Indiana converts 3rd and 10 with a strong throw from Jackson to Camper for an 11-yard gain, bringing the Hoosiers just short of the goal line. On the next play, Josh Henderson punches in a touchdown. We've got a game. Louisville 21, Indiana 14.
2:08 p.m. – Jackson is showing some impressive accuracy on this drive, most recently completing a 24-yard pass to tight end Bradey Archer to the 13-yard line. That's Jackson's sixth completion of this drive.
2:03 p.m. – Jackson completes a quick pass to Jaylin Lucas to convert third down, then hits James Bomba for another first down.
2:02 p.m. – Plummer heaved the ball near the goal line on 3rd down, and it bounced off the Louisville receiver and into the hands of Phillip Dunnam for an interception, his second in three games. Looks like Indiana might have gotten away with pass interference, but it wasn't called. Big play for the defense.
1:59 p.m. – On 3rd and 15, Indiana executes a screen pass to Josh Henderson for a 12-yard gain. The Hoosiers go for it on 4th and 3, and Jackson's pass to Cam Camper, running a slant route, is batted away. Chalk that one up as a missed opportunity for Indiana to really get back in this game.
1:53 p.m. – Louisville's Brock Travelstead shanks a punt for just 18-yards, giving Indiana optimal field position at its own 44-yard line.
1:52 p.m. – Plummer makes an incredible throw to Jamari Thrash for a 57-yard touchdown, but it's called back for holding. Facing 3rd and 14 on the next play, Louisville gets Andre Carter to jump offsides, bringing up 3rd and 9. Plummer's throw was behind Jimmy Calloway, forcing a Louisville punt.
1:41 p.m. – A perfect 30-yard pass from Tayven Jackson to Jaylin Lucas gives Jackson his first-career touchdown pass and puts Indiana on the board. Indiana grabbed some serious momentum to start the second half after recovering the onside kick and capitalizing with a touchdown. Louisville 21, Indiana 7.
1:40 p.m. – Indiana's first offensive play of the half is a screen pass, which goes 21 yards to Jaylin Lucas. Josh Henderson fumbled on the following play, and officials ruled Indiana recovered it. Louisville challenged the call, but the ruling stands.
1:36 p.m. – WOW! Indiana goes for an onside kick to start the second half, and it bounced perfectly to Louis Moore. Great execution by Chris Freeman there. Huge momentum for the Hoosiers out of the locker room
1:35 p.m. – Louisville gets the ball to start the second half. It's obvious, but Indiana has to get a stop here to have any chance of winning.
1:15 p.m. – At halftime, Louisville leads Indiana 21-0. After looking like a unit that could keep Indiana in games during the first two weeks, the defense really faltered in the first half, allowing 302 total yards. Offensively, Jackson missed too many throws high, and the running game generated just 21 yards on 15 carries.
1:12 p.m. – Indiana elects to punt on 4th and 3 from its own 43-yard line. Lucas picked up 10 yards on the first play of the drive, then it was a quick three and out. Thought they might go for it, but Allen chose to play it safe here.
1:11 p.m. – Indiana has 1:51 left in the first half to salvage anything from an otherwise disastrous first 30 minutes.
1:06 p.m. – TOUCHDOWN LOUISVILLE. Jawhar Jordan split the Indiana defense for a 25-yard run. Indiana's Aaron Casey and Jamari Sharpe crashed hard off the edge, but they went too far into the backfield, creating a lane for Jordan. Good blocking from Louisville, too. Louisville 21, Indiana 0.
1:05 p.m. – On 3rd and 4, Plummer finds a wide-open Jamari Thrash in the middle of the field. He's been Louisville's best receiver today, so it's hard to imagine how Indiana would leave him so open. Louisville is threatening to score again before the half.
12:58 p.m. – Indiana runs a wide receiver screen on 3rd and 26, which had no chance of converting the first down. Not much has worked for the Indiana offense thus far.
12:54 p.m. – OC Walt Bell calls a designed quarterback run on 3rd and 1, and Jackson picks up two yards for the first down. A bad snap from Zach Carpenter pushes Indiana way back to 2nd and 23. Right guard Max Longman down after the play, which would be a big loss. Matt Bedford started at right guard the first two games, but was listed questionable before today's game and hasn't played.
12:50 p.m. – TOUCHDOWN LOUISVILLE. Maurice Turner essentially walked in the end zone for a 2-yard score. Pretty rough drive for the Indiana defense there, as it missed a handful of tackles and didn't get much pressure on Plummer. Louisville 14, Indiana 0 with 7:44 left in the second quarter.
12:46 p.m. – Louisville has reached the red zone on a 7-yard pass from Plummer to Thompson. Indiana's defense bottled up runs well in the first two weeks, but that hasn't been the case as often today.
12:43 p.m. – Indiana is having a really tough time containing Jamari Thrash. He has 3 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown so far.
12:41 p.m. – Jackson is sacked, so Indiana has to punt again. Louisville takes over on its own 22-yard line.
12:37 p.m. – Louisville leads Indiana 7-0 after the first quarter. The blown coverage, which led to an 85-yard Thrash touchdown is the main difference. Jackson is 7-for-11 passing, but too many throws have gone high, including the one that was deflected for an interception. Indiana has to clean things up in the secondary, too.
12:35 p.m. – On 3rd and 8, Josh Henderson makes a nice catch on another throw that was a bit high from Jackson, but it leads to a first down and an 18-yard gain. Jackson missed a wide-open McCulley on his next throw, which again was high.
12:31 p.m. – TOUCHDOWN LOUISVILLE. Plummer connects with Jamari Thrash, who was wide open on the right side of the field. A completely blown coverage by the Indiana secondary. Louisville 7, Indiana 0.
12:30 p.m. – Jackson's 3rd and 12 pass was intended for DeQuece Carter, but it was a bit high and deflected off his hands. The ball deflected to Louisville's Cam'Ron Kelly for an interception. Obviously not a good result for Indiana there, but not the worst either. It would have been a 54-yard field goal had it fallen incomplete, so it's almost like a punt.
12:26 p.m. – Indiana tried an end around to the speedy Kamryn Perry, but the blocking was just not there to open any sort of running lane for him. A few plays later, Indiana faced 3rd and 12 and called a timeout to talk it over. It would be about a 54-yard field goal from here.
12:20 p.m. – On 3rd and 4, Jackson did well to avoid the Louisville pass rush, then threw a jump-ball up to Donaven McCulley who made an impressive leaping catch for a 24-yard gain. Big completion to keep the drive alive.
12:17 p.m. – Jamier Johnson in the game now at cornerback after missing last week's game. He's targeted on his first play, but Plummer's throw flies well out of bounds. Louisville kicker Brock Travelstead missed the 38-yard field goal attempt, so the game remains scoreless.
12:14 p.m. – Plummer completes a deep ball down the side line for a 43-yard gain to Jamari Thrash. The ball was a bit under thrown, so Phillip Dunnam was able to make a touchdown-saving tackle. Looked like some miscommunication from the secondary there.
12:11 p.m. – Jack Plummer keeps it on a read-option play and gives Louisville its first first down of the game.
12:09 p.m. – I meant to note this earlier, but Indiana's starting offensive line is left tackle Carter Smith, left guard Mike Katic, center Zach Carpenter, right guard Max Longman and right tackle Kahlil Benson. Matt Bedford warmed up, but he was not out there for the first series.
12:08 p.m. – Indiana's opening drive stalls after a Jackson incompletion and one-yard run from Lucas. James Evans' punt sets Louisville up at its own 8-yard line.
12:05 p.m. – Jackson got Louisville to jump offsides on 3rd and 2, giving Indiana a first down. Jackson had James Bomba WIDE OPEN down the middle of the field, which would have gone for an easy touchdown. That's a missed opportunity for Indiana, but they're still driving.
12:04 p.m. – Indiana is force feeding Jaylin Lucas early on. He has the first three touches of the game, and Indiana is already at the 50-yard line.
Noon – Indiana received the opening kickoff, a touchback, so Tayven Jackson and the Hoosiers will start the game on their own 25-yard line.
11:30 p.m. – Indiana listed five players questionable, but all are participating in warmups. This includes cornerbacks Nic Toomer and Kobee Minor, running back Christian Turner, offensive lineman Matt Bedford and tight end Trey Walker.
11:15 a.m. – Indiana will be without quarterback Dexter Williams II, as expected, as well as wide receiver E.J. Williams, who was injured last week against Ohio State.
