With the April transfer window open for business, what better time to release — still — too early rankings for the 2023 college football season?

ESPN has done just that, releasing its 2023 College Football Power Index, which is the "measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule."

As usual, the SEC is smattered all over the top of the ranking. Kentucky checks in at No. 28, good for eighth in its league:

  • No. 2 Alabama
  • No. 3 Georgia
  • No. 4 LSU
  • No. 12 Tennessee
  • No. 16 Ole Miss
  • No. 18 Florida
  • No. 19 Texas A&M
  • No. 28 Kentucky
  • No. 30 Arkansas
  • No. 32 Mississippi State
  • No. 39 Auburn
  • No. 40 Missouri
  • No. 42 South Carolina
  • No. 73 Vanderbilt

Along with the ranking comes some projections. The FPI is predicting Kentucky will finish with a record somewhere around 7.2-4.9, giving it an 88.7 percent chance to win at least six games, a 1.3 percent shot to win the SEC East, a 0.2 percent chance to win the SEC Championship and a 0.1 percent chance to make the College Football Playoff.

UK's 2023 regular season schedule opens up as easy as it could ask for, as it will play three home games against Ball State, EKU and Akron, then head to Nashville to open SEC play at Vanderbilt.

Following their attempt to earn redemption against the Commodores, the Wildcats will return home for their first SEC game at Kroger Field, welcoming the Florida Gators.
