Kentucky Reportedly Reaching Out to Rutgers Transfer Cam Spencer
This offseason hasn't exactly gone according to plan for Kentucky.
The Wildcats' roster isn't taking shape. There really is no shape to try and make out as the final week of May approaches. UK swung and missed on Hunter Dickinson, then lost out late on Keshad Johnson.
Between the decisions of those two forwards, a host of other players that have either "received interest" or been "reached out to" by the Cats have also gone off the board, leaving many to wonder what options are even left for coach John Calipari to try and grab.
Well, add a guard to that ever-shrinking list. NJ Advance Media's Adam Zagoria reported on Monday that Kentucky is amongst a new slew of programs that has reached out to Rutgers transfer Cam Spencer.
Originally a transfer from Loyola Maryland, Spencer led Rutgers with 13.2 points-per-game this past season to go with 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists a night. He shot 44.4 percent from the field, 43.4 percent from 3-point range and 89.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Now after one season with the Scarlet Knights, he's possibly on the move again. His junior season with Loyola saw the 6-foot-4, 207-pounder average 18.9 PPG. Zagoria reports that Georgetown, Indiana, Miami and Texas are other programs interested in the Davidsonville, Md. native.
UK needs depth in the worst way, as its 2023-24 roster currently features just five freshman — DJ Wagner, Aaron Bradshaw, Justin Edwards, Rob Dillingham and Reed Sheppard — as well as a pair of sophomores in Ugonna Onyenso and Adou Thiero, along with walk-on-turned scholarship combo Brennan Canada.
Spencer, who has just one year of eligibility remaining, could be an option for Calipari and the Cats, who are looking to heighten the hopes of Big Blue Nation this summer.
