Kentucky basketball and head coach John Calipari haven't had a great transfer portal cycle following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.
The Wildcats have seen multiple bench players hit the road and portal out of Lexington, while more entered their name into the NBA draft, or are testing the draft waters, not committing to return to UK for next season.
Calipari did what he could to try and convince coveted Michigan big man Hunter Dickinson to come to the Bluegrass, but Kansas and Bill Self won that monstrous sweepstakes. Other names of interest have since come and gone, still leaving the Cats with no new transfer additions.
That was originally expected to change this weekend with the decision of San Diego State forward Keshad Johnson.
Johnson portaled after four seasons with the Aztecs, but wasn't originally on Kentucky's radar. Then on May 6, he announced that UK was in his final five schools in his new recruitment, along with Texas Tech, USC, Arizona and Oklahoma.
It came as a surprise, but it quickly turned into something real, as Johnson then took a visit to Lexington in early May, with reports following that a move to Kentucky seemed like a very real possibility.
That was, until the past couple of days. Arizona has all of a sudden become the team to beat. 247Sports' Travis Branham logged a crystal ball prediction on Friday, projecting Johnson to make the move to Tucson. Two more crystal ball picks have since followed.
The 6-foot-7, 225-pounder totaled 113 games and 71 starts for SDSU. In those games, he averaged 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds.
As a senior in the 2022-23 season, he averaged a career-high 7.7 points and 5.0 boards. The Oakland, Calif. native scored double-digit points in 13 games last season and was apart of the Aztecs team that made a surprise run to the National Championship game. He scored 14 points and had four rebounds and an assist in the loss to UConn.
Johnson was the No. 300 overall player in the 2019 class, per 24/7 Sports Composite. He had offers from Nevada, Cincinnati, Georgetown and Washington State before choosing San Diego State.
Kentucky seemed to be the overwhelming favorite just a few days ago. Things sure can change quick, as the Cats are trending to still be without an addition via the portal in the middle of May.
Johnson is expected to announce his decision on Saturday.
