2024 Transfer Portal Quarterbacks

Tracking Transfer Portal quarterbacks and their statistics

We are now in a really unique timeframe. Many of the top Transfer Portal quarterbacks will be making decisions. From Dec. 11 onward, this article will focus on updating top Transfer Portal quarterback news.

Jan. 13 update

After Jordan Maiava decided to go with Georgia, he then decided to switch to Southern California. He's not the only quarterback changing his tune.

Long before Alabama decided on hiring Kalen DeBoer as the head coach to replace Nick Saban, the Washington Huskies head coach was able to gain a commitment from Will Rogers. As a passer, he had 12,315 yards and 94 touchdowns during his time at Mississippi State. Rogers will not be adding to those totals in Seattle.

Now, Maiava quickly pivoted from UGA to select USC. Does Rogers do something similar and go back to the SEC by following DeBoer to Alabama? Perhaps another school in the South that has at least some Air Raid principles in their offense like Miami or South Carolina?

Rogers will have plenty of suitors no matter which region of the country he ends up playing his final year of college football. He's a proven signal-caller whose talents will be in demand.

Jan. 9 update

With Miami adding quarterback Reese Poffenbarger to its roster, perhaps the Hurricanes will have their 2024 quarterback. Then again, perhaps Mario Cristobal is creating more competition for the job by adding an accomplished FCS signal-caller.

That brings up the other aspect of the Transfer Portal that often gets overlooked. Not every school can land a big-time signal-caller that's already battle-tested at the highest level. Thus, competition ensues.

For Miami, Jacurri Brown, Emory Williams, and Poffenbarger are likely to battle it out this spring. That could be similar to what Georgia is going to do but with a twist.

The Bulldogs are bringing back Carson Beck to lead UGA in 2024. After that, maybe it's a quarterback 2025 competition between current freshman Gunner Stockton and newly acquired UNLV transfer Jordan Maiava. The latter is coming off a freshman campaign with 3,085 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Maiava is still developing but his skills are already on film. Especially at quarterback, that's what a head coach like Kirby Smart likely prefers: experience. That decision is understandable. Like Miami, a competition will come but a year later.

For now, the vast majority of top Transfer Portal quarterbacks are already heading to their new schools. That being the case, do not be surprised if a few more quarterbacks hit the Transfer Portal in April and look to compete for jobs even if that new opportunity takes over a year to reach starting status.

Poffenbarger and Maiava could be two quarterbacks looking to move up to the Power 4 and show what they can do. Will it be a trend? It's something to monitor.

Jan. 6

While there's the discussion of Cam Ward deciding to go to the NFL Draft but not yet officially signing paperwork, another player is off the board in an unusual way.

Quarterback Kaidon Salter went into the Transfer Portal. Then, a change of heart.

Auburn is one school that many thought would be attractive for Salter as Hugh Freeze is the former Liberty head coach. Miami and several other programs could have ended up being his destination as well.

In other quarterback news, Ohio State has its quarterback with former Kansas State signal-caller Will Howard. To say that the quarterback options are dwindling for the Canes and other programs that have not yet landed a quarterback from the Transfer Portal is probably an understatement. It's still not over, however.

One never knows what will happen with the spring window of April 15-30, and there are still players that could come to UM and compete for a starting job.

In particular, former James Madison quarterback Jordan McCloud is still available. He comes from Tampa (Fla.) Plant. Perhaps Miami or another school down South ends up with McCloud behind center.

Dec. 30, 6:50 a.m. update

Going by intel, there is a possibility that Cam Ward does enter the 2024 NFL Draft. As with any other scenario, the timing of such a decision is important for all teams attempting to sign him.

Ohio State, Auburn, Miami, and Florida State are schools that have been attached to Ward at one point in time or another, and there's always a chance of other programs being involved with Ward as well.

Bottom line, will several programs attempt to close on another quarterback if Ward keeps waiting? One or more college football programs could be left out in the cold if this drags on too long.

Dec. 27, 7:27 a.m. update

Arizona's Jayden de Laura began the season as the starter for the Wildcats. After an injury and backup Noah Fifita playing extremely well, de Laura is now on the move for a second time.

Beginning his career at Washington State (2020-2021), de Laura is leaving Arizona with the same number of seasons as his original school (2022-2023). De Laura does bring a unique blend of experience and statistics to his third school, whichever program that may be.

De Laura is 666 of 1,051, good for 63.4%, 8,489 yards, 63 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions. The 6-foot and 205-pound quarterback will have one more season of eligibility. He should have quite a few choices with his obvious talent and experience.

Dec. 23 update

While the Miami fanbase awaits the decision of Cameron Ward, Maalik Murphy is now a Duke Blue Devil according to a report. the former Texas Longhorns signal-caller is a great pickup with his natural 6-foot-5 and 240-pound frame and ability to make plays with his arm or his legs.

Murphy's 2023 statistics include completing 40 of 71 passes, a 56.3% completion rate, 477 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Dec. 18, 9:00 p.m. update

Now that Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson is officially in the Transfer Portal, there will be opinions about which schools should pursue him and also the programs where Jefferson would be a good fit. To that point, the following report is intriguing:

Miami truly wanting to make a splash with a Transfer Portal quarterback is prudent. Maybe the Hurricanes do not want to wait and get left with nothing regarding Cam Ward. Same deal with former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard

He's visited Southern California and those are the first two quarterbacks to have visited the Canes.

TCU is rebuilding. That would be an interesting choice for Jefferson. Then there's UCF with Gus Malzahn, a coach with a proven track record of developing mobile quarterbacks like Cam Newton.

Dec. 18, 8:25 a.m. update

With former Toledo quarterback Dequan Finn selecting Baylor and former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord going with the Syracuse Orange, the quarterback movement is now well underway. There's also some interesting speculation about another quarterback.

Former Texas Longhorn Maalik Murphy, according to On3, has a 95% chance of landing at Duke. The Blue Devils and former Miami head coach Manny Diaz? That would be quite random.

Then again, the Transfer Portal is quite random in general and that's why it's so fascinating.

Dec. 17, 12:25 p.m. update

As expected, former Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers will take his talents to the Great Northwest and play for the Washington Huskies.

That's one less signal caller that Miami or any other college football program could circle back to if Cameron Ward goes elsewhere. Going to be a really interesting next couple of days.

Dec. 16, 5:25 p.m. update

Finally, Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson is in the Transfer Portal. It's been expected for quite some time that Jefferson would announce his intentions. Here's his own social media post via X:

His career passing numbers would be 7,923 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions. Jefferson also has 626 completions from 962 attempts, a 65.1% completion rate.

Early on, there were reports about Jefferson heading to South Carolina. There hasn't been as much news about Jefferson's next school, but he's likely to be highly coveted. Hard to find 6-foot-3 and 250-pound signal callers with five prior years of college experience.

Dec. 13, 8:15 p.m. update

The Transfer Portal quarterback situation began to have more clarity within the last 24 to 48 hours. There's former Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke who's heading to the Big 10 and the Wisconsin Badgers, Notre Dame has former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard's commitment, and former Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is heading to North Carolina State.

Those are three of the signal callers who made selections. There are big names still on the board, too.

If a person wants to know about Miami and big-time Transfer Portal quarterback Cameron Ward, including his lavish dinner along Miami Beach, you should check out the front page of AllHurricanes. There are multiple articles detailing Ward's recruitment each step of the way.

Here's the article detailing Ward's visit to The U, including hanging out with rapper Rick Ross:

Cam Ward's Miami Visit: Prime 112 Dinner And An Appearance From Rick Ross | Donno Video

Ward is also going to visit Florida State this week according to multiple reports from 247, On3, etc. It's shaping up to be a big Miami versus Florida State battle for the former Washington State signal caller. There's still something else to consider.

Miami hosted Will Howard earlier this week as well. It's not out of the question that Miami could end up with the Kansas State signal caller instead of Ward. AllHurricanes will have more about Howard coming up soon.

Dec. 11, 7:00 p.m. update

The Miami Hurricanes are going after the biggest names in the Transfer Portal quarterback market. According to the following report from Ross Dellenger, arguably the two biggest names in the Transfer Portal are on campus for The U today and tomorrow:

If the Canes land either Kansas State's Will Howard or Washington State's Cameron Ward, it would give the Miami football program a huge boost to go along with its tremendous 2024 recruiting class.

Here are the 2023 statistics for both players:

Will Howard

: 219 of 357, 61.3%, 2,643 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions

Cameron Ward

: 323 of 485, 66.6%, 3,785 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.

Dec. 11, 4:30 p.m. update

There are several quarterbacks that either have or will decide soon. That being the case, there's still one quarterback that Miami, Ohio State, Florida State, and many other college football programs would love to land. That's former Washington State and Incarnate Word quarterback Cameron Ward. There could be a price for going after him.

College coaches either roll the dice and wait for Ward and risk missing out on other quarterbacks in the meantime, or they have a cutoff date where if Ward is not committed to their program or another school, it's time to move on and take another quarterback.

This is not much different than waiting on a 5-star quarterback from the prep ranks. Once the top signal caller makes a college choice, there's a quick pivot to other quarterbacks by college coaches. If the No. 1 high school quarterback plays the waiting game beyond summer, that's when college coaches have to make tough decisions.

To that point, if a team has a shot at former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, would that program's coaching staff turn to him quickly if Ward is not sure of his college choice by the end of this week?

Perhaps this situation is best defined by what options are realistic. There's still a chance that more than one school is left scrambling to find a different signal caller if they miss on Ward and/or other top quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal.

Dec. 7, 8:00 a.m. update

There's been a lot of chatter about schools hiring head coaches. Will all of the Transfer Portal quarterback information that's being discussed among fans, do not forget that each signal caller is going to want to know exactly which person will be the quarterback coach, offensive coordinator, and of course the head coach.

Schools that are in transition at any of those spots, or a combination of them, are at a disadvantage in getting a quality quarterback. That's why there's likely to be a rush with offensive coordinator hires and the like. It's risky to jump into the decision, but if not done quickly, the window could close with most of the top quarterbacks.

To that point, Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm being an offensive mind probably helped him with getting Texas Tech transfer signal caller Tyler Shough. Brohm's quarterback reputation is well-known throughout the college football community. There are a few other quarterbacks that are done with the process.

Indiana quarterback Brendan Sorsby is heading to play for Cincinnati. As previously noted, Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff is staying in the SEC and heading to play for Kentucky.

Here's the updated list of quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal.

Dec. 6, 4:20 p.m. update

Former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff is staying in the SEC and going to Kentucky. The former 5-star quarterback has been a career backup but still has talent. Remember, it's Georgia that Vandagriff is leaving. Lots of competition.

Additionally, Texas Tech signal caller Tyler Shough is going to Louisville. Jeff Brohm's pro-style offense will be a good fit for a passer like Shough who can be consistently accurate (63.2% career competition rate).

Expect a couple of more big names to hit the airwaves soon. By the middle of next week, there will be plenty of quarterback news across the board, and perhaps the Miami Hurricanes included. To that point, here's the latest from AllHurricanes own Alex Donno:

Miami's Top Quarterback Targets Are Still Available Despite Some Transfers Already Picking Destinations | Video

Dec. 4, 9:30 p.m. update

There are more added players below than one could imagine. Once again, the entire list of quarterbacks are below that have been found (and someone will jump in the Transfer Portal as soon as I publish this).

Two of the new quarterback entrees that are interesting are Taylen Green from Boise State and Brock Vandawgriff from Georgia.

Green is not as well known being a Group of 5 quarterback, but he's a capable passer who can also run. Green has 436 yards rushing and 9 touchdowns this season.

Vandagriff is a player who did not earn the starting job at Georgia after being one of the highest-rated recruits from the 2021 recruiting class. He's another mobile signal caller who's also capable of hurting teams with his legs.

Here is the updated list of Power 5 and non-Power 5 quarterbacks:

Dec. 4, 11:15 a.m. update

Every time one looks at his or her computer, boom! Another quarterback in the Transfer Portal. This time it's former UCF and Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel who is looking for a new school.

He's going to be a sixth-year senior and has 14,865 yards passing to this point in his college football career. Every Power 5 quarterback and their statistics are down below so that people can look and compare the best players.

Dec. 4, 10:45 a.m. update

With Oregon State losing its head coach, Johnathan Smith, to Michigan State (95 million dollars will do that), there's also the perception that a recent Transfer Portal addition will follow Smith to East Lansing, Mich.

Oregon State quarterback Aidan Chiles is heading to the Transfer Portal and allegedly considering joining the Michigan State program. All three of the quarterbacks from MSU's 2023 roster are in the Transfer Portal, so Chiles would be a big addition to the Spartans' roster.

Going by 247, Chiles held the #58 overall rating in the 2023 recruiting class and was the #7 quarterback overall. Beyond Michigan State, one can be assured that there will be several potential landing spots for the 6-foot-3 and 200-pound signal caller from Downey, Calif.

All of Chiles' 2023 statistics, along with the other Power 5 and non-Power quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal, are below.

Dec. 4, 8:57 a.m. update

Well, the Transfer Portal quarterback sweepstakes probably just went into an entirely different stratosphere. Ohio State signal caller Kyle McCord is no longer a Buckeye. That result?

That means head coach Ryan Day and his staff are likely looking for a Transfer Portal quarterback, or at least that's my own assumption. If true, it's hard to imagine that a program well-known for producing NFL quarterbacks will not nab one of the best quarterbacks from the Transfer Portal.

The likes of Cameron Ward, Riley Leonard, and Will Howard come to mind, just for starters. That means more competition for the Miami Hurricanes and every other school.

More updates later today. For now, here's the list I have for Power 5 and non-Power 5 quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal:

Dec. 3, 8:00 p.m. update

Another Power 5 quarterback is now in the Transfer Portal. From Boston College, Emmett Moorehead has experience as a starter during the 2022 season and the first game of 2023.

He's also a big pocket passer at 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds. Morehead came from California and it will be interesting to see where his next home will be.

Dec. 2, 10:45 a.m. update

An interesting prospect heading to the Transfer Portal, per ESPN, would be North Carolina State's MJ Morris. He will be a redshirt-sophomore in the fall of 2024, and he's been a starter for the Wolfpack. Going through game preparations and being a Power 5 program's triggerman is going to be appealing to multiple college football programs.

Morris is an athletic quarterback but one who prefers to make plays by throwing the football. Yes, he can certainly take off and make plays, but the Carrolton (Ga.) High School product is one that has the potential to one day be a top-notch college passer.

He's been added to all the other quarterbacks and their statistics a little further below.

Dec. 1, 1:50 p.m. update

With his name now in the Transfer Portal, Cameron Ward will be one of the most sought-after players, regardless of position, for this Transfer Portal cycle. The Washington State quarterback has unique physical traits and football awareness.

Watching him make accurate throws without setting his feet and being on the run is fun to watch. This young man could end up just about any place so his recruitment is interesting as well. As noted earlier today, however, watch out for Auburn with Ward.

Dec. 1, 6:50 a.m. update

Some intel this morning. First, heard Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson as an option for Auburn, then just a bit later, I heard just the opposite from a separate source. That's the nature of the Transfer Portal era.

How much of that information was correct in the first place is difficult to say. It's a point of reference, however, for people to realize that many of these situations are truly fluid even if the information is correct. To that point, an interesting note about an ACC quarterback is in the Transfer Portal and is a common name.

Word on the street is that Riley Leonard will visit Auburn and Notre Dame (and yes, that very well may have changed). With Washington State's Cameron Ward not officially in the Transfer Portal as of early Friday morning, it will be interesting to see if Leonard and Ward eventually both visit the Tigers. Let's be honest, just about everyone is interested in Ward.

Most people I have spoken with feel that Ward is the best potential signal caller in this year's Transfer Portal. Also of note, Hugh Freeze and his staff prefer a mobile signal caller for their style of offense, so Leonard and Ward certainly fit the profile well.

Between Friday and the middle of next week, look for more clarity about top signal callers planning visits as (hopefully) some of them publish information on their social media pages and perhaps even do interviews.

Nov. 30, 3:43 p.m. update

Most quarterbacks that enter the Transfer Portal and are also coveted by elite programs have two or three seasons of experience, if not more. In the case of departing UCLA quarterback Dante Moore, he's the former 5-star signal caller out of Detroit (Mich.) Martin Luther King with offers from over 40 programs.

He visited numerous programs including Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Oregon, Texas A&M, and others before originally making a public commitment to the Ducks. Later, he made the switch to UCLA and became a bruin.

Moore intends to enter the Transfer Portal after his freshman season in Westwood, Calif. for the Bruins. Much like many quarterbacks with more experience, expect Moore's Transfer Portal recruitment to be highly contested.

Here are the updated Power 5 and non-Power 5 quarterbacks entering the Transfer Portal.

Nov. 30, 1:00 p.m. update

With the Oregon State football program no longer being a Power 5 school moving forward, and head coach Jonathan Smith accepting the same position at Michigan State, it's no surprise that quarterback DJ Uiagalelei will enter the Transfer Portal per Beavers Edge.

Three seasons at Clemson and one with the Beavers. Uiagalelei can still use his COVID-19 season from 2020. There's also speculation that the 6-foot-4 and 250-pound quarterback will follow Smith to East Lansing, Mich. That's just one rumor, however.

Wherever Uiagalelei signs for 2024, he will be one of the most experienced signal callers in college football.

Nov. 30, 7:30 a.m. update

There are still more potential big names that could jump into the quarterback Transfer Portal sweepstakes. To that point, the hottest name over the last 24-48 hours would be KJ Jefferson from Arkansas.

A true dual-threat signal caller at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, Jefferson provides the arm strength and experience an offensive coordinator would want for a pocket passer, while his size and brawn allow him to churn out tough yards after contact; he's also proven to often make defenders miss.

For his career, Jefferson's rushing statistics include 523 carries, 1,876 yards, a 3.6 average, and 21 touchdowns. Note that sacks count against rushing totals so Jefferson would be near 5 yards per tote if not for that statistic. Arkansas is an SEC West program as well where it goes against Texas A&M, LSU, and Alabama each year, three teams with plenty of NFL defensive talent.

Here's the updated list of Power 5 and non-Power 5 quarterbacks already in the Transfer Portal:

Nov. 29, 9:10 p.m. update

Another Power 5 signal caller makes his name available for the Transfer Portal. This time it comes from the soon-to-be-defunct Pac 12.

California quarterback Ben Finley spent one year at Cal-Berkeley after three seasons in Raleigh, N.C. and North Carolina State.

Further down there's the entire list of Power 5, and then non-Power 5, quarterbacks and their statistics.

Nov. 29, 6:50 p.m. update

Probably a connection between Florida State grad Mack Brown and former FSU quarterback Brad Johnson (yes, the same quarterback that helped Tampa Bay win a Super Bowl) is a good reason for Max Johnson leaving the Aggies and heading to North Carolina, per the following report by 247.

The younger Johnson began his college career at LSU and has been at A&M for the past two seasons.

Nov. 29, 6:15 p.m. update

As expected, Duke quarterback Riley Leonard will not return to Durham, N.C. to play for the Blue Devils next fall. That's especially true of his now former head coach Mike Elko heading to Texas A&M to coach the Aggies.

Auburn is a school that reportedly really likes Leonard, but the alleged odds-on favorite would be Notre Dame to land him. Here are Leonard's stats from his injury-shortened 2023 season, and his total stats for Duke are down below with all the other Power 5 quarterbacks.

7 games: 195/165, 57.6%, 1,102, 3/3

Nov. 29, 2:00 p.m. update

Quarterback Grayson McCall is now in the Transfer Portal after a five-year run at Coastal Carolina. He's been one of the most successful quarterbacks in the country with over 10,000 yards passing.

Here's something else interesting about McCall.

He has 1,118 yards on the ground and 18 touchdowns to boot. McCall is a great fit for an offense that wants to operate a run-pass option or consistently uses bootlegs, waggles, and quarterbacks on the run in general. Look for his opportunities to be plentiful.

McCall's career passing statistics are below with the rest of the quarterbacks that are in the 2024 Transfer Portal.

Nov. 29, 10:30 a.m.

There's buzz about Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward entering the Transfer Portal. That would be another major prospect looking to change schools at the quarterback position. Here are Ward's numbers from the 2023 season alone:

323/485, 66.5%, 3,736, 25/7

Also important, consider that Ward's team is only 5-7 and he did not have the chance to play from a lead nearly as much as he would at many other schools. Thus, Ward could be an even more impactful player, potentially speaking, at another program.

For his career, Ward has 13,871 yards and 119 passing scores. He's also an athlete who could run more if needed. It will be interesting if Ward does take his talents elsewhere.

Here's the updated list of Power 5 quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal, followed by the non-Power 5 quarterbacks.

Nov. 28, 8:15 p.m. update

A Big 10 quarterback is heading to a new school, per his X account. It's Athan Kaliakmanis from the Minnesota Golden Gophers. A two-year starter for PJ Fleck and the Big 10 West team, he did see his numbers falter a bit in 2023.

Like all of the other quarterbacks that are in the Transfer Portal, you can read Kaliakmanis's career statistics down below.

Nov. 28, 7:45 p.m. update

A second quarterback from Vanderbilt will leave Nashville, with Ken Seals being the latest. Also, Temple quarterback E.J. Warner is going to be in the Transfer Portal

Do not sleep on Warner, by the way. He's a player who's had some good moments during his first two seasons in Philadelphia. It would not be surprising if he ends up at a Power 5 school.

You can find the entire list of transfer quarterbacks below, statistics included.

Nov. 28, 6:30 p.m. update

A quarterback that should garner quite a bit of interest would be Vanderbilt's A.J. Swann. He is now finished with a sophomore season that Swann would probably like to have back, but the injuries are what they are.

Additionally, a quarterback who did not finish the 2023 season on the field and is now in the Transfer Portal would be Mitch Griffis from Wake Forest.

Here's the updated Power 5 list with career statistics, Swann and Griffis included:
