How Does College Football Fix Its Officiating Problem?
No doubt, officiating has always been and continues to be difficult. That's not being disputed. However, sometimes the calls change the outcome of a contest and need to be brought to light.
The Louisville at Miami game includes missed calls that changed the trajectory of the outcome, and that's the example for this article. The following represents a few of the calls and people could find more without much effort. Just scrolling X for five minutes allows for these three videos to be found after seeing the game live.
Additionally, there are probably misses going both directions but here are a few that did not go Miami's way. Again, this is about the overall issues college football faces with officiating.
Let us begin with the obvious missed pass interference on Hurricanes wide receiver Jacolby George.
This call on Miami defensive lineman Rueben Bain, Jr. might be the biggest head-scratcher. If this is an illegal play, what exactly did Bain do?
The previous video on Bain goes against Miami, but then this happens versus Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke and no call?
To reiterate, these were three official's calls that did not end with the proper decision. There are many more and anyone who rewatches the game and looks for an offensive lineman that's holding will be blown away. It's probably the call that the college and NFL games are the furthest apart with officiating.
That's just one particular area and a person could go into more improper officiating situations. For instance, the targeting call is truly out of control and likely creates the most angst on social media.
The number of missed calls with intentional grounding (quarterback being inside the pocket and still getting away with tossing the football to no true intended target) is another call that quite often ends with an improper call.
Now, if someone has an answer on how to at least improve the officiating at the college football level, what might that answer be?
