Miami Falls to Florida State, 27-20
Miami made a valiant effort at Florida State but fell 27-20. It was a wild game with true freshman quarterback Emory Williams making his first career road start.
Williams finished the contest just 8 of 23, but those completions went for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns, both to wide receiver Jacolby George.
Ultimately it was Williams’ effort that stood out the most as he ran the football hard when he needed to do so, and that even got the Canes a fourth-down rush for a first down on the last series of the game.
Williams, however, was carted off the field with an arm injury after that play. That’s when the return of Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke took place. He couldn’t get it done as he threw an interception to basically end the game with 40 seconds remaining.
Perhaps none of that would have happened if there had been better officiating, as the horrific missed safety call truly hurt the Hurricanes during the latter stages of the second quarter.
For the Seminoles, quarterback Jordan Travis had his moments in the game and finished 19 of 31 for 265 yards and a touchdown pass to big-time receiver Keon Coleman. In fact, Coleman’s fade-ball catch in the right corner of the end zone ended up being the winning score with 11:00 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Miami totaled 335 yards of offense for the game, just ahead of Florida State with 322. The Canes' defense was led by Francisco Mauigoa with 9 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Safety James Williams was also all over the field and tied Mauigoa with nine total tackles.
Miami fell to 6-4 on the season and returns to play its home finale against Louisville on Nov. 18.
AllHurricanes will have much more on the controversial non-safety call, Williams’ injury, and what’s next for the Hurricanes on Sunday and Monday. Stay tuned, because the Miami at Florida game produced way too much to discuss in just a couple of post-game articles.
