Kavion Broussard Pledges to Miami Hurricanes
For the third consecutive day, the Miami Hurricanes are gaining a public verbal commitment. This time it’s from Kavion Broussard, an offensive tackle.
If you believe the name Broussard sounds Cajun, you’d be correct. He hails from Zachary (La.) High School, roughly 30 minutes north of Baton Rouge and LSU. Broussard has yet to come to the University of Miami for an official or unofficial visit, but it’s a place that The U knows well.
Each of Offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson, defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, and recruiting director Dennis Smith come from The Boot as well. That adds substance as to why Broussard is now the latest player to pledge to Mario Cristobal and the Canes from Louisiana, the third overall from Bayou Country, and Miami's fourth offensive line commitment.
The other three offensive line recruits would be Juan Minaya, Nino Francavilla, Juan Minaya and Deryc Plazz.
Broussard's offer list includes Florida State, TCU, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Arkansas State, Tulane, Cincinnati and Mississippi State among others. He already took official visits to the Red Raiders (June 16) and Tigers (June 23). Obviously Broussard will trek to Coral Gables for an official visit during the 2023 regular season.
What does the 6-foot-7 and 260-pound offensive tackle bring to Miami?
Watching his junior film, a few items stood out. First-step quickness for a player his size is impressive; Broussard often attacked edge rushers with what’s called a jump set. Instead of moving backwards with his kick step, he’d matriculate at an angle and attack the defender with his length (impressively long arms) and physical style of play.
Another aspect to note – and it’s a fantastic sign for Broussard’s future – would be his patience when pass protecting. Many younger offensive linemen tend to lunge towards their opponent. The Louisiana product, meanwhile, did a nice job of staying balanced no matter if he used a jump set or traditional kick step, while delivering blows, and controlling the action without being too far out over his feet. That allowed Broussard to counter different moves much more consistently from speedy edge rushers.
Broussard also did a nice job of getting up to the second level in the run game. Quickness and desire ruled the day. Broussard would angle off an inside linebacker, allowing his running back a hole to run through. He’s physical overall. Again, combining that point with Broussard’s athleticism, that’s going to pay dividends moving forward.
Last point about Broussar’s junior film, it’s about the long-term potential with his frame. He’s thin by Power 5 standards, for now. Look for Broussard to max out at over 300 pounds, all in due time.
To summarize, the Hurricanes added their third commitment in as many days, the fourth offensive line commitment for the 2024 class, as well as the third prospect from Louisiana, and one with a lot of physical gifts to play offensive tackle. It is a good day for Cristobal and Canes fans alike!
