With the Miami Hurricanes gaining Joshisa Trader as their 17th commitment for the class of 2024, it’s a whirlwind of excitement for Canes fans.

This article dives into what it means for Miami short-term and long-term.

Let’s get some of the basic questions out of the way, and then also hit on some big picture points about Trader selecting The U at the end. There’s also a video that further goes into detail about expectations for Trader that you can see here:

Which positions will Trader play?

Slot and flanker. Those two spots are natural to him, and in time it’s not out of the question that he can play boundary as well.

Additionally, at the end of a half or game, it will not be a surprise if Trader plays some free safety or cornerback. His ability to break on the football is elite.

Types of routes Trader excels at?

Really doesn’t matter. Trader is a fluid athlete that adjusts well. He can handle the route tree and will continue to work his craft once in Coral Gables. Expect him to perform well regardless of what’s asked of him.

What will be his best role as a freshman?

Again, like with the routes, it’s really up to Trader. He’s adept at being moved around to different wide receiver positions and coming up with different ways to catch the ball and make plays afterwards, based on his prep career.

No reason to believe that offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and the Canes staff will do anything other than place this young man in positions that allow him to catch the football and make plays, even as a true freshman.

Just projecting a bit, tunnel screens, jet sweeps and the like will be involved, and expect Trader to also earn receptions by working hard and learning the offense. At the end of the day, that’s paramount no matter what. He’ll do that just fine.

Fitting in with the other young wide receivers

This is fun. There’s Chance Robinson joining Trader in the 2024 class, and there’s also 2023 signees Nathaniel “Ray Ray” Joseph and Robby Washington. All four of these young men have one superb trait:

Speed.

They can make plays in a variety of ways and will make life difficult for college defenses even if it’s a quick slant or bubble screen. Yes, they can all get over the top of the defense as well.

All of that is important to note because it will be hard to pinpoint which Miami receiver to double cover. Options galore!

Long-term ramifications of Trader picking Miami?

It’s perception. Trader is one of the more well known recruits in America. Plus, he’s another prime South Florida recruit that is making the decision to stay close to home.

His decision to select Miami will almost certainly help Mario Cristobal and the Canes with other recruits, especially in talent-rich Florida. Hard to ignore big-time prospects staying in the 305 and playing for the Canes. There’s another bonus as well.

Miami beat out Florida State

It’s one thing to lose a talented recruit in your backyard, yet quite another to have to play against him. Trader will still be in the Miami versus Florida State rivalry, but it’s not going to be in the garnet and gold.

Look for this topic to come back up again as it relates to other potential Miami recruits.

Also, position-specific, quarterbacks in 2025, 2026 and on down the line will like what the Canes are now doing. Of course 2024 Miami quarterback Judd Anderson is happy as well. That’s a given.

Overall, Trader’s commitment was huge for the Canes. He will be a big-time player in the Orange and Green.
