Head coach Darrell Asberry was a savant when it came to learning about Miami Hurricanes commitment Dylan Day.

Of course Day has played for Asberry at Baton Rouge (La.) Southern Lab and he’s a class of 2024 recruit. I had the opportunity to speak with coach Asberry on the phone and gain a lot of knowledge about his star player.

Here are a few of the cliff notes, followed by a podcast that goes into far more detail about what coach Asberry had to say.

Best Long-Term Position: Free Safety, because when the ball goes in the air, Day showed an elite level of ability to track it and make a play on it.

A Versatile Defensive Back: Day can play press cornerback, or slot. He’s often asked to try and take away the opposing team’s best wide receiver, one-on-one, in man coverage.

Recruiting: LSU did not truly come after him, which was perplexing. Miami made Day a priority and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry really wanted Day. He had recruited him while at Marshall, and during his very brief time at Tulane, prior to joining Mario Cristobal’s Miami staff.

Overall Theme About Asberry’s Thoughts Regarding Day: Trust. He has trusted that his player would make “the play,” regardless of situation and where he’s lined up (cornerback, safety, wide receiver).

Asberry was clear about that throughout the conversation that he knew Day was a special player; he also made it clear that Day was a great young man away from football. That’s even better to know.

Impact for Miami: Why not a potential starter by the end of his freshman year? Let’s be honest here. At least one of Miami’s two starters safeties will turn pro after the 2023 season. That’s either Kamren Kinchens and/or James Williams. If both do leave, at the very least Canes fans should expect Day to see significant playing time.

Overall, I had started the conversation with coach Asberry just to gain a better understanding of what the Canes would be getting. After I had emailed him and we played some phone tag, from the time I answered his call until the time I put down my cell phone was fantastic.

I had already come to the conclusion that Day would be a really good player for the Canes, but now I’m not so sure he’s not the best prospect Miami has committed as of May 28, 2023. Those all-around intangibles matter. To that point, here’s the podcast that delved into that subject and more:
