Mizzou Guard John Tonje to Miss Remainder of Season
Missouri men's basketball guard John Tonje is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season due to a foot injury that he suffered during the offseason, the team announced on Tuesday.
"John has been hampered by an offseason foot injury this entire year," Missouri head coach Dennis Gates said in a statement. "He was one of our best players during summer workouts before suffering the setback and, unfortunately, the injury has prevented him from being completely healthy and reaching the levels he is accustomed to. We look forward to him taking the proper amount of time to fully recover and then showcasing his skills and complete potential again in the future."
The graduate guard transferred to Missouri after four years at Colorado State, where he averaged 14.6 points per game in the 2022-'23 season. Tonje only appeared in eight of Missouri's first 16 games, and only three of the last eight. In his limited action, Tonje averaged 9.8 minutes and 2.6 points per game. 2023 was the final year of eligibility for Tonje.
The guard position for Missouri had already taken a toll from injuries as sophomore Kaleb Brown and graduate Caleb Grill have also suffered significant injuries. Brown is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a stress reaction in his left shin. Grill, an Iowa State transfer, has missed Missouri's past six games due to a wrist injury.
The news of Tonje's injury was announced shortly before Missouri's matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa.
