Analysis and Evaluation of 2022 WR Recruit CJ Williams
CJ Williams has no shortage of options when it comes to his football future. The 6-foot-2 wide receiver has received an offer from Northwestern as well as other top football schools throughout the country including Alabama, Ohio State and Auburn.
Although the Mater Dei product has over 40-plus offers thus far, at this time he has only gone on official visits to three schools: Stanford, Texas and Notre Dame. Williams is reportedly strongly considering Notre Dame, Texas, Alabama, Ohio State and USC. His level of interest in Northwestern is still unknown.
Williams has solidified himself as one of the top targets in the country in his three years at Mater Dei. In the 2019-20 season he played in 12 games and finished the year with 50 receptions and a total of 684 yards while leading his team to winning the Trinity League Championship. This past season Williams showcased marked statistical improvement in Mater Dei’s five games that ended with the Monarchs once again claiming the Trinity League Championship. He finished the year with 16 receptions and a total of 239 yards while improving his yardage per catch and total touchdowns despite playing in seven fewer games.
Williams was also recognized for his stellar play this season when he was selected to play in both the Polynesian Bowl and the All-American Bowl.
Below are Williams's highlights from his junior season along with an analysis of his strengths and weaknesses.
Analysis: CJ Williams is an elite pass catcher who gets off the line quickly. He has proven he can be a deep threat by getting behind defenses with his speed. Williams can also create separation with ease because of his ability to change speeds within a short timeframe. That shiftiness and quick twitch movement lends itself well to creating after the catch as well. Williams has shown he has the focus to track the ball over either shoulder while being closely covered by his defenders and is adept at making plays in the air. He’s a first-class route runner who understands how to read the defense to keep himself open for as long as possible. Overall, Williams is a prospect brimming with potential. He has all the tools to be a standout receiver at the next level and in the pros.
