Former Buckeyes WR Garrett Wilson In Top 5 Of 2022 NFL Re-Draft
The Woody Hayes Athletic Center has become a factory, and its CEO in that factory is offensive coordinator Brian Hartline.
Hartline is arguably the best positional coach in the country when it comes to not only bringing in talent at wide receiver but then developing them to get drafted in the NFL.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the latest to come in and get built into NFL talent in the Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver factory, but just a year prior it was Garrett Wilson who jump-started three-consecutive former Buckeye pass-catcher selections in the 2022 NFL Draft as the New York Jets No. 10 overall selection.
Sports Illustrated re-drafted the 2022 NFL Draft and, with how Wilson performed in his first year in the league, they had him getting picked No. 3 overall to the Houston Texans in their hypothetical reselection.
"Wilson’s sturdy hands and yards-after-catch skills made him a dynamic weapon for the Jets, despite poor quarterback play last season," Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano wrote. "Wilson, who was named Offensive Rookie of the Year, had 83 catches for 1,103 yards and four touchdowns. His numbers will probably look better in 2023 with Aaron Rodgers as his starting quarterback. But in this alternative universe, Wilson would make life easier for incoming rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud."
Wilson trailed his Jets teammate cornerback Sauce Gardner and Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson who were picked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in SI's re-draft.
Had that been where the Austin, TX native was actually selected, it would have been the highest draft position for an Ohio State receiver in program history — a record that Marvin Harrison Jr. will look to break in the 2024 NFL Draft.
