Could Naming Devin Brown Starter Have Ramifications for Future Ohio State QBs?
There may be a wrong answer to the Ohio State Buckeyes' starting-quarterback question, according to a site covering the Buckeyes.
According to an article, choosing sophomore Devin Brown as the starter over Kyle McCord (the more experienced junior) would throw off the recruiting pipeline Ryan Day and his staff have been building at the position.
The first potential dilemma would be whether or not McCord would stay at Ohio State for his senior year. According to the author, Ryan Stano, the latter of those two options is more probable than the former.
"If Brown does win the starting job, he will likely be the starter for the next two seasons," Stano said. "That means that McCord will likely transfer elsewhere to pursue a starting job."
There would be plenty of schools interested in McCord should he decide to search for greener pastures.
Alternatively, McCord has already waited a long time for a shot at the starting gig, and one more year might not be enough to get him out of Columbus.
The Buckeyes could have another issue later on down the road, regardless of what happens with McCord.
"[Picking Brown as a starter] also means that Noland has no shot to win the starting job when he comes in as a freshman," Stano said. "That would mean that a quarterback battle would take place in 2025 between Noland, St. Clair, and perhaps Lincoln Kienholz."
Kienholz, currently a freshman, would be the more experienced choice in that battle with the two first-years.
The Scarlet and Gray are days away from opening the 2023 season in Bloomington, Indiana against the Hoosiers. Day has said if Brown and McCord remain even in his mind after last week's practices, both would play on Saturday.
A press conference scheduled for noon on Tuesday gives Day one more chance to choose a starter or roll with both Brown and McCord at Indiana.
