ESPN's Greg McElroy Thinks Ohio State Buckeyes Are 'A Little Too High' In College Football Playoff Rankings
The Ohio State Buckeyes came in at No. 6 in the most recent edition of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, following their disappointing loss to the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.
The Buckeyes, who were previously ranked No. 2 in the rankings before the loss, fell behind the likes of the four undefeated teams - Georgia, Michigan, Washington and Florida State - as well as the 11-1 Oregon Ducks.
Ohio State remained above Texas and Alabama, however. And according to ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy, that was a mistake.
“Right now Ohio State is a little too high," he said. "Their schedule has been very good, and we’ve all acknowledged the strength of the Big Ten this year,” McElroy said. “They have two wins against teams that have eight or more wins on the season, Penn State and Notre Dame, two ranked wins as well. Texas and Alabama each have three."
McElroy may have a point. Both the resumès for Texas and Alabama are objectively better than the Buckeyes.
And as he points out, the Tide and the Horns have just had a tougher overall path to their 11-1 marks.
“I’m not trying to compare Penn State to Tennessee, but if you look at the sheer quantity of the tests that those teams had to pass, with both Texas and Alabama, it’s just more," he added. "They’ve had more tests than what Ohio State has had. They failed their biggest one this weekend."
That said, should either - or both - of Texas and Alabama win their respective conference championship games, it would be unsurprising to see them leap the Buckeyes in the CFP rankings when it's all said and done.
