Ohio State OC Brian Hartline Says Joe Philbin Is 'Great Addition'

Ohio State Buckeyes offensive coordinator Brian Hartline has teamed up with his former coach in the NFL in new offensive analyst Joe Philbin.

The Ohio State Buckeyes' offensive meetings feature some of the best minds in college football where each position coach is free to throw a schematic idea out there.

That may spark other conversations surrounding that topic or open a new, separate can of worms on how the Buckeyes' offense should attack opposing defenses for either just that week or moving forward for the season.

One more mind that will be in that room is new offensive analyst and former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, who the Buckeyes hired May 23. Despite his 39 years of coaching experience, including 19 of the last 20 seasons in the NFL, offensive coordinator Brian Hartline said Philbin isn't "just blurting out all the time" in team meetings.

"He's waiting to maybe be called upon or pulled aside or whatever, but I'm sure if there's a thing he believes strongly in, he'd be willing to voice his opinion," Hartline said. "All opinions are welcomed. I would just say that he's not there trying to overtake the room. He is very respectful of everyone in there and, as much as we're learning from him, I know he's trying to learn from us."

Philbin began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Tulane in 1984 before serving as the offensive line coach at three different Division III schools: Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Allegheny College from 1986-93.

He took his first Football Bowl Subdivision job in 1994, as Ohio's offensive line coach. After one season in Athens, OH., Philbin was the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Northeastern from 1995-96 and Harvard from 1997-98. He was Iowa's offensive line coach from 1999-2002.

The 61-year-old's first NFL coaching gig was with the Green Bay Packers in 2003, serving in a variety of roles before being promoted to offensive coordinator for Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers from 2007-11, winning Super Bowl XLV.

Philbin was named the Miami Dolphins' head coach where he served from 2012-15 and coached Hartline in his first three seasons.

He served in a variety of offensive assistant roles with the Packers, Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys in every year except 2019 since getting fired by Miami.

Hartline said having Philbin on the staff has been "great."

"The wealth of knowledge that he has as a position coach, head coach, football coach, I think everyone in the building can learn something from him," Hartline said. "It's really awesome. To say it's not pretty cool in my perspective to see, be around coach Philbin again in a different light, in a different way would be an understatement. I'm very happy he's here. He's a great addition to our staff."
