Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson 'Excited To Be Back' After Foot Injury

Ohio State Buckeyes running back TreVeyon Henderson, hampered by injuries, was limited to 571 yards and six touchdowns on 107 carries in 2022.

Ohio State Buckeyes running back TreVeyon Henderson was a shell of his freshman-year self last season.

It became clear later on in the season that Henderson was injured with a foot injury that limited his planting and cutting ability. Henderson had surgery in the offseason and said Saturday that his foot feels "probably better than it was before."

"I'm just excited to be back, get on the field with my teammates, man, compete and work hard," Henderson said. "I'm just looking forward to a great year. It feels good to be back."

The 5-10, 212-pound running back said in April he didn't feel "himself" at all after he initially suffered the injury in week 3 against Toledo Sept. 17. Henderson said every time he would take an initial hit in a game, it would reset the injury.

On 107 carries last season, Henderson ran for 571 yards and six touchdowns, while hauling in four passes for 28 yards and one score. In 2019, Henderson scored 19 touchdowns, breaking the true freshman program record.

While he was out, Henderson said he focused on his leadership for his teammates. However, the natural mental hurdles still took its toll on Henderson knowing he couldn't be out there playing.

"Mentally, it's a lot," Henderson said. "It can take a toll on you if you don't have the right mindset. It comes with the game, just the mental part of the game, the mental part off the field, it's a lot that comes with it. Keeping your mental straight, it's important."

Henderson said once the doctors cleared him in April, he went back home to Virginia, met up with Hopewell High School track and field coach Kerry Gray and started building back up the quick-burst speed he once had.

"My foot was down, so I just wanted to get that speed back, and I felt like I got faster," Henderson said. "Coach Gray and coach Mick did a good job. My explosive power, I wanted to get all those tools back because coming off of surgery, you aren't just going to be the same person, so I had to go actually earn those tools back. And I felt like I did."
