Former Ohio State Wrestler, UFC Fighter Injured While Saving Family from Fire
A former Ohio State Buckeyes wrestler has been hospitalized after saving his parents from a house fire, according to reports.
Mike Coleman redefined what it means to be a hero on Tuesday. A former Buckeyes wrestler who went on to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Coleman made three trips into his parents' burning home.
The first two entrances helped clear his mother and father from danger. Coleman then went back inside the home in search of the family dog, but succumbed to the smoke and was found unconscious by paramedics.
Coleman was transported to Toledo by way of an airlift and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
The story of Coleman's rescue went viral on social media. Many of his former UFC colleagues, including Wes Sims, have posted comments of praise and wishes for a quick recovery.
"Mark saved both (his parents) and went back for Hammer, his dog," Sims said. "I swear to GOD - he's one of the toughest individuals ever created, been through so much a movie at this point could not give his life work justice."
A fundraising page on GoFundMe has been created by Coleman's two daughters to support the 59-year-old's hospital bills. As of this article's posting, over $28,000 has been raised by almost 500 people.
"We all knew he was one of the best athletes, now we know he is a true Hero," McKenzie and Morgan Coleman wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We are a faithful family and know God works miracles. Please keep praying with us that our hero has complete healing."
