Ohio State QB Devin Brown 'Idolized' Former Buckeye Tate Martell Growing Up

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Devin Brown said his scrambling abilities really developed when he moved to Utah and played at Corner Canyon High School.

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Devin Brown has previously listed Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers as two of his favorite quarterbacks of all time.

However, when it comes to mobility he has another name in mind: former Buckeyes quarterback Tate Martell.

"My earliest memory is watching Tate Martell in high school," Brown said. "Him at Bishop Gorman, I just like idolized him. I used to go to his camps at Bishop Gorman just because of the way he played in high school. I think that's kind of where it started."

Martell was a former four-star recruit in the class of 2017 and, at the time, was the fourth-best quarterback prospect in program history.

J.T. Barrett ran the ship during Martell's freshman season, but heading into the 2018 season, the Las Vegas native lost the quarterback battle to Dwayne Haskins.

Martell did play in six games, though, completing 23 of 28 passes for 269 yards and one touchdown.

Former head coach Urban Meyer liked using Martell in goal line packages to run the read option, as he notched 128 yards and two scores on the ground in 22 rushing attempts.

It looked like after Haskins' departure for the NFL that Martell had a shot to assume the starting role, but former quarterback Justin Fields transferred in and Martell transferred out to Miami.

Martell spent two seasons as a backup with the Hurricanes, appearing in seven games before transferring to UNLV in 2021. Martell retired from football in January 2022 to focus on his business ventures.

Brown said he wasn't sure why Martell didn't work out at Ohio State.

"I have no idea. I was not here. I couldn't tell you," Brown said.
