Ole Miss Baseball Loses Battle For Governor's Cup in 2-1 Loss to Mississippi State
The Ole Miss Rebels lost the 2023 Governor's Cup on Tuesday night to their in-state rival, the Mississippi Bulldogs, by a score of 2-1. The Rebels trailed the entire game and failed at a comeback attempt in the bottom of the eighth.
Grayson Saunier started on the mound for the Rebels in their midweek SEC matchup and quickly got himself into trouble allowing back-to-back doubles and one run in the first inning. Saunier's night ended after 3.2 innings surrendering three hits, two walks, and one earned run.
Ole Miss threw four arms in Tuesday night's loss to Mississippi State, but Saunier was credited with the loss. Freshman RHP Sam Tookoian gave up the second run of the game in his 2.0 innings of action.
The Rebels got on the board in the seventh inning thanks to a ground-out RBI from senior infielder Garrett Wood, cutting Mississippi State's lead to one entering the eighth. Ole Miss had a chance to at least tie the contest in the eighth, but unfortunately left runners on first and second, and the comeback was snuffed.
With the loss, Ole Miss falls to 21-20 overall on the season and 3-16 in the SEC. The Rebels are still dead last in SEC baseball going into their weekend series at home against the Georgia Bulldogs, who are currently 7-11 in conference play. First pitch is set for Friday night at 6:30 p.m. CT.
