'This is The Deepest We've Been': Ole Miss' Eli Acker Discusses Adaptability of O-Line
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels are returning four starters along the offensive line in 2023, and the unit is looking for its fifth piece with fall camp underway.
With center Caleb Warren dealing with an injury nearly one week into camp, the depth of Ole Miss' offensive line is already being tested, but the unit is adapting well according to junior Eli Acker.
"It's great," Acker told reporters Monday after practice. "We have a lot of guys who can play a lot of positions. Reece [McIntyre] has done a great job stepping up and playing... It's huge having guys who can move around and play any position."
Reece McIntyre has been with the Rebels since he arrived on campus in 2019 primarily serving as depth, but he has steadily improved throughout the offseason. Ole Miss also added offensive line transfers Victor Curne and Quincy McGee this offseason who can both play multiple positions.
"This year's probably the deepest we've ever been offensive line wise," Acker said. "We truly have eight or nine guys that can play."
John Garrison joined the Rebels as run game coordinator and offensive line coach prior to the 2022 Texas Bowl and Acker gave high praise for his new position coach.
"[He's] been great," Acker said. "He came into the room and established ground rules and a culture and we've ran with it."
Acker mentioned that he has been working on improving his "second step" this offseason and talked about his own development as a player.
"[It takes] a lot of reps and filming everything," Acker said. "A lot of different drills and just going back to the film to see if it's getting quicker."
