Ole Miss Rebels Lane Kiffin Named On3 National Head Coach of the Week
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels season is back on track following the team's statement victory over the LSU Tigers last Saturday, and Lane Kiffin received recognition on Monday for the big win.
On3 Sports selects a Power 5 head coach of the week throughout the college football season, and Kiffin earned the honors for Week 5.
Ole Miss' offense was tested versus the Tigers, and the unit answered the call in the 55-49 victory over LSU, as both teams combined for 1,343 yards of total offense. Kiffin was forced to make difficult decisions throughout the contest, and it started on the opening drive with a crucial fourth down call.
The Rebels drove down to LSU's four-yard line before the team was faced with a fourth-down decision; Kiffin could either take the automatic field goal with Caden Davis, or he could take a chance he has taken many times in the past and go for six points on fourth and goal.
Kiffin put the ball in his quarterback's hands, and Jaxson Dart connected with Quinshon Judkins for a touchdown to put the Rebels up a score on their first drive. Those extra four points made a massive difference in the game and helped set the tone for the Rebels.
Ole Miss proved to the college football world that a tough loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide would not be a nail in its coffin, but rather a teaching moment, one that Kiffin utilized to get the most out of his team versus LSU.
Kiffin's Rebels are now 4-1 and still have a shot at taking the wide-open SEC West. Ole Miss is set to host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT, and the matchup will be televised on SEC Network.
