Penn State wrestler Shayne Van Ness shared Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors after scoring three pins at the Journeymen Classic. Van Ness collected the award with Wisconsin's Dean Hamiti.

Van Ness, a redshirt sophomore, won by first-period fall in each of his three bouts at the season-opening tournament. The 149-pounder pinned Army West Point's Eddie Hummel (2:06), Bloomsburg's Cade Balestrini (2:58) and Lehigh's Kelvin Griffin (1:30). He led Penn State's effort to go 41-15 at the event in Bethlehem, Pa.

Van Ness, ranked second nationally at 149, is one of eight Penn State wrestlers who began the season in the top-3 nationally at their weight classes. In 2022, Van Ness went 24-7 with a strong postseason run to finish third at the NCAA Division I Championships. He began the tournament seeded 12th and defeated three of the top five seeds to become an All-American.

Van Ness is among six Penn State wrestlers scheduled to compete in the 2023 NWCA All-Star Classic. The event is scheduled for Nov. 21 at the Bryce Jordan Center.
